To omit or slur over (a syllable, for example) in pronunciation.
To strike out (something written).

To eliminate or leave out of consideration.
To cut short; abridge.

It's also a term used in scansion, to indicate when the last syllable of a word should be run together with the first syllable of the word which follows it. Interesting, eh?
