Went to straight clearning, undecided?

I applied to uni in high school but didn't meet my conditions to get in. This course i applied for is no longer the course i want to do so i guess it worked in my favour. I then had a gap year, working in a shop and then did an apprenticeship in Nursery Nursing and am now a newly qualified Nursery Nurse. I thought my uni days were dead and gone and that I wouldn't be going to uni at all but a few months back (due to experiences during my apprenticeship) I am considering Social Work and now am recently considering Speech and Language Therapy as well.

The problem I have is I am very undecided on 2 things- what course i want to do and whether I even want to go back to study.

I applied in July and so went straight to clearing. I am now trying to decide what uni and what course whilst also deciding whether I want to spend the next 4 years as a student and graduating at 24 (I am 20 now). I am also going away for 2 weeks in October (booked before i considered uni again) so I'm not sure how this will affect me if i get in this year.

I didn't do well at school. I lacked concentration and didn't really study- hence why i didn't meet my conditions. I'm unsure whether uni will be any different - i'm not convinced it will be. I've been out of study for 2 years and although i did an apprenticeship not a lot of study was involved as most of my work was practical and I learned on the job so getting back into it, i can imagine will be incredibly difficult.

The main reason i want to do these degrees is money. Don't get me wrong, I have a good interest in the degrees that I am considering and would love career but ultimately, the qualification I have now and the jobs that come with it are not ideal and are not good money-wise so i want to keep working with children but for a better wage and something a bit more exciting- my plan is to get the degree then specialise.

I am very unsure what to do. My parents are supporting me however are concerned about job prospects when i graduate. A friend of ours did the Social Work degree and was unable to find a job afterwards and so is working in a completely different field.

My main concerns are:
- going back into study after 2 years will be incredibly difficult
- being a student for 4 years, not graduating until 24, the risk of no jobs at the end of it while i could have been working full time and earning (not much, but probably more than if i was a student)
- not liking uni life (because i've never been good at study) and dropping out, therefore wasting yet another year+ of my life and disappointing others

I'm really not sure what to do and I don't have a lot of time to decide! Help!:confused:

Hi Sweetlittletale

I see exactly where you are coming from. The thing about University is that you have to mix and match things to get everything going for you. Mixing and matching things would be studying full time and at the same time working part time since you are concern about job prospects.

This way you keep this side of carrier alive. And to balance your social life you have to join societies, clubs that interest you to meet new friend, hang out, have fun and get all the experience you need to finally make your dreams a reality.

University is not only about pressure but also about enjoying and exploring the things you like to balance these busy lives.

We also have help and support available for all students if you feel you might need one for any reason. And we do have teams of understanding friendly staff who teach in a way that you wont feel the academic pressure because of their friendliness and everyone on the same vibe.

Just talk to somebody at. 0161 295 0080 Come along on 16th of August for clearing to ask any questions you have and see accommodation to get the feeling of student life. We do have open days coming up Sept the 13th and 18th of Oct 2014 www.salford.ac.uk/clearing so feel free to come by. And please feel free to let us know how you got on.
And now universities are fighting over you!!!
