Large surface area of alveoli
Alveoli very thin = short diffusion pathway
Capillaries surround alveoli to take diffused oxygen around body = maintains the gradient between lungs and blood

thin cell wall, shorter diffusion distance, gas exchange happens faster
branched structure of alveoli, theres more alveoli in a compact space so more gas exchange can happen
its surface is slightly moist, allows for better diffusion
