But it isn't in any detail at all on a smaller scale

That's the same with any science A level though, you don't go into every detail because you can't. Many people would just have no idea what was going on, it would take up too much and anyway, if you learnt everything at A level whats the point of university?

Hmm, the general consensus seems to be...
Biology
History
Music/Psychology
Sociology
Media Studies
This thread needs banter.
My personal opinion:

Biology
Music

History

-----(Mickey Mouse Subjects below this line)----------

Psychology

The people putting Music outside the top three are deluded. Psychology is not more respected than Music. A lot of wishful thinking from people doing Psychology as one of their subjects, methinks.

Somebody 'studies' Music...
I'd put music in the top three I bet it's a difficult subject and highly valued.

Put these 6 A-Levels in order from most respected to least respected:

Psychology
Biology
Sociology
History
Media Studies
Music

History
Biology
Psychology
Sociology
Music
Media Studies

It all really depends on what course you want to take really.

There's probably not much difference in how history and biology are perceived, both are highly respected.
I don't think people are realising just how valuable History is by putting it 4th... It teaches exceptional analytical skills which are valued in a vast majority of professions and courses. Music at A level may be better than GCSE or just listening to it, but at the end of the day if it's not relevant to the course you want to do it's useless. Good luck using an instrument and the ability to read sheet music while you write an essay, or make a CV, or file reports, etc, etc.
Imo, Music isn't all that helpful as you can just take lessons and learn all of that outside of your curriculum anyway, without having to waste your time on it during your school year.

That said, there isn't really such thing as a better respected A level - well, depending on who you're trying to impress. General studies however is always a no-no.

I'd a friend who flunked his other exams but got an A* in general studies and claimed he was smarter than the rest of us because of that (we all got As in maths, biology, chemistry, history, econ etc).

Some people will believe anything to feel good about themselves.
I think music theory involves a lot of shall I say, 'intellectual' thinking.
