Once every four years the international community is brought together through a sporting event like no other. An event that makes the Pan-American Games and the Commonwealth Games look like a school sports day to the national championships. This is of course the Olympic Games. However contrary to popular belief the Olympic Games do not start with the opening ceremony; they've already begun with sportsmen and women training their backsides off to make the cut.They've already begun with the next few years seeing major qualification competitions and points along the journey to Rio. This thread is intended as your guide to the games and all that will bridge the two year gap between now and the greatest show on earth.It is of course the Summer Olympics, actually being held in Brazil's winter but that's not the point..

- At some point I'll get round to putting a list of date's for all sports in but for now this'll have to do. I also plan on adding Paralympic sports as well.

Aquatics

There is a separate qualification procedure for all 5 disciplines of aquatics in the 2016 Rio Olympics:

Diving

Competitor places: 136 divers (68 men, 68 women) of which 1 synchronised diving team per gender is allocated to the host nation.
Per Nation Limits: 16 divers (max 8 per gender) in addition nations are limited to 1 synchronised diving team per event and 2 divers per individual event.

Individual Diving Qualification

- 12 best ranked divers at the 2015 FINA World Championships
Winner of each of the 5 continental diving competitions
- 18 semi-finalists at the 2016 FINA Diving World Cup
- The qualifiers from the FINA World Cup may claim an additional space for their nation, until the limit of 34 divers is reach. (9 extra spaces)

Synchronised Diving Qualification

- 3 best ranked diving teams at the 2015 FINA World Championships
- 4 best ranked teams, not qualified through the world championships at the 2016 FINA Diving World Cup

Marathon Swimming

Competitor Places: 104 (only women compete in synchronised swimming) – of which 1 team and 1 duet is allocated to the host nation.
Limits per nation: 9 athletes maximum. 1 duet (2) and 1 team (9) limit per nation.

The Marathon qualification systems for men and women mirror each other. The following swimmers will qualify, all numbers on a per gender basis:

- The 10 best swimmers in the 10km swim at the 2015 FINA World Championships will qualify.
- The 9 best swimmers at the 2016 Olympic Marathon Swim Qualifier, open to nations not qualified through the 2015 World Championship.
- The best ranked swimmer, not yet qualified, from each continent at the 2016 Olympic Marathon Swim Qualifier, will qualify. For a total of 5 swimmers.

Swimming

Competition Places: 900 swimmers
Per Nation Limits: Maximum of 26 swimmers per gender. No more than 2 swimmers/ 1 relay team per event.

For the purposes of Olympic qualification swimming is in reference to the sport of swimming when practised in an indoor pool, open water/marathon swimming has a separate qualification system which is outlined further down the aquatics section.

Individual Swimming Qualification

Qualifying for an individual event is achieved by the swimmer meeting the Olympic Qualifying Standard (A standard), in the event that places are not filled by A standard athletes then athletes who have achieved the Olympic Selection Standard (B standard) will be invited until the quota of 900 is full. Where a nation has no A standard swimmers, they may enter 1 man and 1 woman in the games. FINA will release the A standard and B standard for each event by 31 December 2014.

Setting the A standard in a FINA approved qualification event will automatically qualify the athlete, although only 2 athletes per event, with no more than 26 athletes per gender being entered in total by any nation. The A and B standards must be set between 1^stMarch 2015 and 1^st July 2016. FINA approved qualification events will included:

- FINA World Championships
- Continental Championships
- Continental Qualify Tournaments
- National Championships
- National Olympic Trials
- Additional Events TBC on 28th February 2015

Relay Team Swimming Qualification

Relay Events will be limited to a maximum of 16 teams in each event. Therewill be two ways for nations to qualify a relay team:

- Be one off the 12 highest placed teams in that relay event at the 2015 FINA World Championships.
- Set one of the four fastest times, excluding those who qualified through the world championship, in the period 1^st March to 31 May 2016. If any team doesn't use their invitation for whatever reason the next highest FINA ranking team will be invited.
- Swimmers entered only in the relay event will be permitted, with nations gaining more relay only swimmers the more relay events they are entered in.

Synchronised Swimming

Competitor Places: 104 (only women compete in synchronised swimming) – of which 1 team and 1 duet is allocated to the host nation.
Limits per nation: 9 athletes maximum. 1 duet (2) and 1 team (9) limit per nation.

The qualification procedure for the synchronised swimming is split down quit into team qualification and duet qualification and places are allocated as follows:

- For the team competition the 8 places will be allocated to the winners of each continental championship, excepting the Americas which will be represented by Brazil, for a total of 4 (excluding the hosts) and the 3 best placed teams the 2016 Olympic Games Qualification Tournament.
- For the duet competition the 24 places will be allocated as; 8 places for countries in the team event, the best ranked NOCs in each of the 5 continental championships who are not yet qualified, and 11 places allocated to the best ranked nations, not already qualified, at the 2016 Olympic Games Qualification Tournament.

Water Polo

Competitor Places: 260 competitors (20 teams of 13, 12 mens teams, 8 womens teams) – of which 1 team per gender is allocated to the host nation.
Per Nation Limit: 1 team per gender (13 player per gender)

The qualification process for men's water polo is:

- 1 place allocated to the best placed team in the 2015 World League.
- 2 best ranked teams in the FINA World Championships
- The best ranked nation in each of the 5 continental championships
- 3 best ranked teams in the Men's Olympic Games Qualification Tournament (to be held in 2016)

The qualification process for women's water polo is:

- 4 places allocated to the winners of continental championships. Brazil will represent the America's NOC and as such no team will qualify through the Americas continental championship.
- 3 places will be allocated to the three best ranked teams in the Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament (to be held in 2016)

Archery

Competitor Places: 128 (64 per gender) – of which 6 (3 per gender) are allocated to the host nation and 6 (3 per gender) are allocated to the tripartite commission.
Limits Per Nation: 3 archers for both events if the nation competes in the team event or 1 archer per event if the team only competes in the individual event.

The archery consists of two events, per gender - a team event and an individual event – all of which share an integrated qualification system, with team qualifiers automatically qualified for the individual events:

- All archers must have met the minimum qualifying standard of 70m round 630 for men and 70m round 600 for women.
- The 8 highest ranked teams per gender will qualify through the 2015 World Archery Championships, for a total of 48 qualifiers (8 men's, 8 women's teams and 24 men's individuals and 24 women's individuals)
- There will be a Final World Team Qualification Tournament where 3 teams (9 archers) per gender can qualify.
- At the 2015 World Archery Championships, the 8 highest ranked archers who's nation haven't qualified as a team will be awarded a place.
- Continental Qualification Tournaments will be held, either as part of an existing continental championship or as a separate event with 3 individual places available in each continent barring Oceania where only 2 places are available, again per gender.
3 individual places will be available for the 3 highest ranked athletes at the 2016 Final Individual Qualification Tournament

Athletics

Competitors: Total Quota of 2005 athletes.
Limits per Nation: Maximum of 3 athletes in individual events and 1 relay team per event.

Individual Qualification

- Achieve the qualification standard with the qualification period
- Or be invited to compete in the games as one of the best ranked athletes, respecting the quota per nation.
- The standards will be released 15 April 2016
- The specific IAAF World Ranking List for Olympic Games Qualification will be released 12 July 2016.
- Long Distance Events (5000m, 10000m, Race Walks and Marathon) will be administered by entry standard only.
- Standard must be set at competitions organised by the IAAF. Times won't be accepted if wind-assisted, hand-timed, or indoor events under 200m or oversized tracks.
- Qualification period for 10000m, Marathon Race Walk and Combined Events begins 1st January 2015
- Qualification period for all other events begins 1 May 2015
- Both end 11 July 2016

Relay Qualification

- Maximum of 16 qualified teams in each relay event;
- The first 8 placed in the IAAF World Relays in 2015 automatically qualify.
- The remaining 8 teams selected from the IAAF Ranking List of 12 July 2016 based on aggregate of two fastest times achieved by national teams in qualification period.
- Qualification period starts 1st January 2015.
- Qualification period ends 11 July 2016

Badminton

Competitor Places: 172 (86 per gender) of which 1 per gender is allocated the host nation and 3 per gender are allocated to tripartite commission.
Limits per nation: 16 (max 8 per gender)

Qualification for Badminton is as follows:

Qualification is achieved through the 2015-2016 badminton season which last from the 4th May 2015 to the 1st May 2016.
- A continental representation scheme is in operation for Olympic badminton whereby if at least one player from each continent must qualify for the games; this is done by offering the highest ranked non-qualifier the spot of the lowest ranked player in the qualification bracket of the rankings. (I.e if no Oceanic players are in the Top 34, the 34th player will make way for the highest ranked Oceanic player). This is to a maximum of 2 continental representation places per country.
- The qualification bracket for singles is the top 34 in each gender rankings.
- The qualification bracket for doubles is the top 16 in the rankings for each of the three events (men's, women's and mixed)

Basketball

Competitor Places: 288 players (12 teams of 12 per gender) – of which 1 team per gender is allocated to the host nation.
Limits per nation: 12 players (1 team)

The qualification spots for basketball will be allocated as follows from the following tournaments:

- To the champions of the 2015 FIBA World Cup for each gender.
- For women's basketball the champion of each continental championship in 2015.
- For men's basketball the champion of each continental championship in 2015 and the finalists of the EuroBasket and America championships
- To the 3 highest placed male teams and 5 highest placed women's teams at the 2016 Final Olympic Qualifying Tournament for each gender.

Boxing

Competitor Places: 286 (250 for men, 36 for women) of which 6 (5 men, 1 woman) are allocated to Brazil and 8 (5 men, 3 women) are allocated to tripartite commission.
Limits per Nation: 13 - 1 athlete per event (10 men, 3 women)

The Olympic boxing qualification is decided on a per event basis, with 1 spot available for each nation in each weight category. Reserved numbers of places per weight category are allocated to a set of championships and ranking series as follows.

For the men's boxing tournament:

- The highest ranked players in each weight category until quotas given are filled in the World Series of Boxing (WSB). The period covered will be November 2014 to March 2015 The quotas for WSB are: (1 to Light Fly, Heavy and Super Heavy, 2 to Fly, Bantam, Light, Light Welter, Welter, Middle, Light Heavy)
- The champion and challenger (2nd placed in rankings) in each weight category at the end of 1st Cycle Competitions in September 2014 will qualify for the Olympics.
- The AIBA World Boxing Championship 2015 (being held from the 5-18 October) will qualify top ranked players in different weight categories to the following quotas

1 for Heavy and Super Heavy, 2 for Light Fly and Fly, 3 to Bantam, Light, Light Welter, Welter, Middle, Light Heavy)
- The top 3 boxers from each weight category at the four Continental Olympic Qualifying Events. To account for Brazil there will only be 2 places allocated to the America's, in 5 weight categories of their choice Brazil will not have host's privilege and as such 3 places will be given in those categories.
- There will be a APB/WSB Olympic Qualifying Tournament for those who have not qualified as above, this will provide 3 places in all categories with the exception of heavy and super heavy categories where only 1 place will be available.
- There will be a AOB Olympic Qualifying Tournament where places will be given to the highest ranked boxers up to quotas (5 for most categories but 1 for heavy and super heavy and 2 for Light Fly.)
- Tripartite commission places of 1 per event in Bantam, Light, Light Welter, Welter and Middle weight categories.

For women qualification places will be allocated as follows:

- The four highest ranked boxers in each of the 3 women's Olympic weight categories will qualify.
- The highest ranked players to the quota in each of the women's continental qualifying tournaments with (2 in each weight category for Asia/Oceania and Europe, 1 in each weight category for Africa and 2 in each weight category for Americas except one category where Brazil will claim a host place)
- There will be 1 tripartite commission place per category.

Canoeing

Slalom

Competitor Places: 82 (61 men, 21 women) - of which 5 (4 men, 1 women) are allocated to the host nation.
Limits per Nation: 5 (4 men, 1 women) - 1 boat per event

- 56 athletes (48 boats) from the 2015 ICF Canoe Slalom Word Championships to quotas (Men - K1 - 15 athletes, C1 - 10 athletes, C2 - 16 athletes (8 boats), Women's K1 - 15 athletes)
- 21 athletes (18 boats) from continental qualifying events) Quotas as follows:
(1 boat from each continent in each event for K1 Men, C1 Men and K1 Women)
(3 boat places across al 6 continents for the C2 Men)

Sprint

Competitor Places: 248 canoeists (158 men, 88 women + 2) - of which 3 (2 men, 1 women) are allocated to the host nation and 2 (across both genders) are allocated to the tripartite commission.
Limits Per Nation: 1 boar per event (18 canoeists maximum)

Qualification will be as follows:

- 171 to quotas from the 2015 ICF Canoe World Championship across all events
(Men's Quotas - K1 1000m - 7 (7 boats), K1 200m - 8 (8 boats), K2 1000m - 12 (6 boats), K2 200m - 12 (6 boats), K4 1000m - 40 (10 boats), C1 1000m - 6 (6 boats), C1 200m - 7 (7 boats), C2 2000m - 12 (6 boats) )
(Women's Quotas - K1 500m 7 (7 boats), K1 200m - 8 (8 boats), K2 500m - 12 (6 boats), K4 500m - 40 (10 boats) )

- 72 from Continental Qualification Events across all events
(Europe Quotas for Men - K1 1000m, K1 200m, K2 1000m, K2 200m, C1 1000m, C1 200m - 2 athlete places and C2 1000m - 4 athlete places)
(Europe Quotas for Women - K1 500m, K1 200m, K2 500m - 2 places)
(America Quotas for Men - K1 1000m, K1 200m, C1 1000m, C1 200m - 1 athlete place, C2 1000m - 2 athlete places)
(America Quotas for Women - K1 500m, K1 200m - 1 athlete place)
(Asia Quotas for Men - K1 1000m, K1 200m, C1 100m, C1 200m - 1 athlete placce, C2 1000m - 2 athlete places)
(Asia Quotas for Women - K1 500m, K1 200m - 1 athlete place)
(Africa Quotas for Men - K1 1000m, K1 200m, C1 100m, C1 200m - 1 athlete placce, C2 1000m - 2 athlete places)
(Africa Quotas for Women - K1 500m, K1 200m - 1 athlete place)
(Oceania Quotas for Men - K1 1000m, K1 200m, C1 100m, C1 200m - 1 athlete placce, C2 1000m - 2 athlete places)
(Oceania Quotas for Women - K1 500m, K1 200m - 1 athlete place)

In the K2 500m (Women) and K2 200m and K2 1000m (Men)the three best ranked, not yet qualified, nations from different continents, excepting Europe, will earn there continent 2 extra athlete places for their continent)

Cycling

BMX

Competitors Limit: 48 (32 men, 16 women) - of which 2 are allocated to the host country.
Limit per Nation: 5 (3 men, 2 women)

- 24 will be drawn from the UCI Olympic Qualification Ranking List (sum total from the 3 best male riders from each nation) of 31 May 2016 (from 30th May 2015) and awarded as 3 places for nation ranked 1-4, 2 places for nations ranked 5 to 7, 1 places for nations ranked 8 to 13
- 1 place each will be awarded to the 4 best nations, not qualified through the olympic ranking, in the UCI Individual BMX ranking of 31 May 2016.
- 3 best male riders at the World Championship 2016, not qualified through above, will earn their nation a place at the olympics.

Track

Competitors: 189 (90 men, 90 women)
Limit per Nation: 15 (8 men, 7 women) - this can increased by 1 per gender from athletes qualified for other cycling disciplines.

For the men's and women's cycling the olympics will be qualifed as follows:

- Each of the five continents has a limit for nations in each event set. These are:
(Europe 5 in Team Sprint, Sprint and Keirin. 6 in Team Pursuit and 8 in Omnium)
(America 2 in Team Sprint, Sprint and Team Pursuit, 3 in Keiran and 6 in Omnium)
(Asia 2 in Team Sprint, Sprint, Kierin, Team Pursuit and 5 in Omnium)
(Oceania 2 in Team Sprint, Team Pursuit and Omnium, 1 in Sprint and Kieran)
(Africa - 1 in all 5 events).

Respecting these maximums and using the UCI Olympic Track Ranking:
- The 9 best ranked teams on the rankings for Team Sprint and Team Pursuit
- The 9 best ranked athletes for the Individual Sprint and Individual Keiran
- The 18 best ranked athletes for the Omnium.

Road

Competitors: 211 (144 men, 67 women) of which 4 (2 per gender) are allocated to the host nation.
Limits Per Nation: 9 (5 men, 4 women) - further limits of 5 per road race for men, 4 per road race for women and 2 per individual time trial for both genders

For the men;s road race:

- 65 places allocated to highest placed nations on the UCI World Tour - nations ranked 1 to 5 recieving 5 places and nations ranked 6 to 15 recieving 4 places
- 9 places from the highest ranked nations on the UCI Africa Tour - the highest ranked nation recieving 3 places and nations ranked 2 to 4 recieving 6 places
- 13 places from the highest ranked nations on the UCI America Tour - the nations ranked 1 to 3 recieving 3 places and nations ranked 4 to 5 recieving 4 places
- 9 places from the highest ranked nations on the UCI Asia Tour - the highest ranked nation recieving 3 places and nations ranked 2 to 4 recieving 2 places
- 38 places from the highest ranked nations on the UCI Europe Tour - the nations ranked 1 to 6 recieving 3 places and nations ranked 7 to 16 recieving 2 places
- 2 places from the highest ranked nations on the UCI Oceania Tour - the highest ranked nation recieving 2 places.
- Those ranked 1 to 2, obeying a 1 rider per nation limit, at each of the Africa, Asia and Americas continental championships.
- Overall no nation may qualify twice through any competition, with qualifiers being taken from those not already qualified in any event.

For the women's road race:

- 62 places from the UCI Ranking by Nation of 31 May 2016 allocated as follows; nations ranked 1 to 5 given 4 places, nations ranked 6 to 13 given 3 places, nations ranked 14 to 22 given 2 places.
- The highest ranked nation, not qualified through the UCI Ranking at the continental championship in Africa, Asia and America preceding the Olympic Games.

For the men's individual time trial:

- 30 places allocated through the final rankings in the UCI World Tour and Continental Tours to the following quotas, with a limit of 1 rider per nation.
(UCI World Tour 1-15, UCI Africa Tour 1-2, UCI Americas Tour - 1 to 4, UCI Asia Tour 1-2, UCI Europe Tour 1-6, UCI Oceania Tour 1)
- The 10 highest ranked nations, one a 1 rider per nation list, at the 2015 World Championship Elite Men's Individual Time Trial Event will qualify.

For the women's individual time trial:

- 15 places allocated as 1 per nation to the 15 highest ranked nations on the 31 May 2016 UCI Rankings
- 10 places allocated to the 10 highest placed nations in the Elite Women's Individual Time Trial Event and the 2015 World Championship

Mountain

Competitor Places: 80 (50 men, 30 women) - of which 1 per gender is allocated to the host nation.
Limit Per Nation: the limit per nation is 5 (3 men, 2 women)

For men:

- 41 places allocated from the UCI Olympic Qualification Ranking (a combination of the 25 May 2015 and 25 May 2016 rankings) with nations ranked 1 to 5 recieving 3 places, nations ranked 6 to 13 recieving 2 places and nations ranked 14 to 23 recieving 1 place.
- 8 places allocated from the continental championships (except for Europe) in 2015 - with the 2 highest placed, excluding those qualified through olympic qualification, in each recieving a place

For

- 25 places allocated the UCI Olympic Qualification Ranking (a combination of 25 May 2015 and 25 May 2016 rankings) with nations ranked 1 to 8 recieving 2 places, and nations ranked 9 to 17 recieving 1 place.
- 4 places allocated to the highest ranked in each of the four continental championships (except for Europe) for a total of 4.

Equestrian

Dressage

Competitor Places: 60 (both genders compete together) - of which 4 are allocated to the host nation.
Limit Per Nation: 1 team - Maximum 4 athletes with minimum of 3 athletes.

Team Qualification

- 3 best ranked teams from the 2014 World Equestrian Games
- 3 best ranked teams from the 2015 European Championship
- Best ranked team at the 2015 Pan-American Games
- If no Africa and Middle East or South East Asia and Oceania team has qualified through the 2014 World Equestrian Games, then the best ranked South EastAsia/Oceania/Africa/Middle East team will qualify. If they qualify in the top 3 then the 4th ranked team irrespective of continent will qualify.
- Best ranked team from South East Asia, Oceania, Africa and the Middle East plus Kazakhstan, Krygyzstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan at the FIE approved special qualification event.
- An unspecified number of composite teams, made up of athlete's who qualified of individuals from the same country, are permitted.

Individual Qualification

- The 1st and 2nd nations in each Equestrian Olympic Groups; North Western Europe, South Western Europwm Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia
- The 1st nation in each Equestrian Olympic Group; North America and Central and South America
- The 1st nation in each Equestrian Olympic Group; South East Asia and Oceania, Africa and the Middle East
- 6 highest ranking FIE Ranking nations on adjust rankings (excluding nations who have qualified a team, athletes that have qualified and individual quota place at the 2015 Pan-American Games, athletes that qualified an individual quota place for the FEI Olympic Group through FIE Athletes ranking - Dressage)

Eventing

Competitor Places: 65 (11 teams (44 athletes), 21 individual) (men and women compete together) - of which 4 (1 team) is allocated to the hosts.
Limit per Nation: 1 Team - 4 maximum/3 minimum

Team Qualification

- The 6 best ranked teams at the 2014 World Equestrian Games
- The 2 best ranked teams at the 2014 European Games
- The best ranked team from the 2015 Pan American Games
- The best ranked team at a 2015 Asia Pacific Championship
- Composite of individuals are allowed and the number including composites may exceed 11

Individual Qualification

- The best ranked in each of the 7 Equestrian Olympic Games Groups (North Western Europe, South Westen Europe, Central Asia & Central & Eastern Europe, North America, Central & South America, Africa & Middle East, South East Asia & Oceania)
- The 2 highest ranked in each of the respective combined groups (Europe, Asia & Central Asia, America, Africa, Oceania & South East Asia)
- The 8 highest ranking in the overall Eventing rankings.

Jumping

Competition Places: 75 (men and women compete together) - of which 4 are allocated to the host nation.
Per Nation Limits: 4 maximum 4 minimum 3 per team

Team Qualification

- 5 best ranked teams from the 2014 World Equestrian Games
- 3 best ranked teams from Western Europe at the 2015 European Games.
- 2 best ranked teams from the 2015 Pan-American Games
- Best ranked team from Africa and the Middle East at selected qualifying tournament
- Best ranked team from Central & Eastern Europe and Central Asia at selected qualifying tournament
- 2 best ranked teams from South East Asia & Oceania at selected qualifying tournament
(no nation can qualify twice)

Individual Qualification
(all places allocated to nation)
- 4 best ranked nations on the FEI Olympic Athletes Ranking from each of; (North Western Europe, South Western Europe, Central & Eastern Europe & Central Asia, Africa & Middle East)
- The 6 best ranked athletes from the Americas at the Pan-American Games
- The best ranked athlete from the the selected South East Asia and Oceania qualifying event
- The 4 best ranked athletes from the overall rankings.

Fencing

Competition Places: 212 places (102 for men, 102 for women) - of which 8 are allocated to the host nation:
Limits per Nation: 16 (max 8 per gender), in addition limited to 1 team of 3 per event in team events and 2 fencers per individual event.

Where mentioned the FIE Ranking list refers to the 2015-2016 season list lasting 3 April 2015 to 4th April 2016

Individual Fencing Qualification

The 11 places in each of the individual competitions for Men's and Women's Epee, Men's Foil and Women's Sabre will be qualified as follows:

- 3 fencers from each of the eight teams in the team competitions will be able to compete individually in their respective weapon's event.
- An adjusted FIE Ranking List using only the 1st placed fencer from nations that have not qualified for the team event, the 2 highest ranked fencers from Europe, America and Asia-Oceania and 1 highest placed fencer from Africa (for each respective weapons category separately).
- The highest ranked competitor from each of the four continental qualifying events These competitions are only open to nations not qualified through the team or individual routes..

The qualifying for Men's Sabre and Women's foil will be as follows:

- The 14 highest ranked competitors on the FIE Adjusted ranking list.
- The 2 highest ranked fencers for each fencing continental zone for 8 total.
- 10 places from Continental Qualifying events with 4 qualifiers from Europe, 3 from Asia-Oceania, 2 from America and 1 from Africa

Team Fencing Qualification

The 8 team places in each of the team competitions for Men's and Women's Epee, Men's Foil and Women's Sabre will be qualified as follows:

- The 4 highest ranked teams on the FIE Official Team Ranking List as of 4th April 2016.
- The highest ranked team from each of the 4th FIE Zones ranked from 5th to 16th on the FIE Official Team Ranking List as of 4th April 2016. If a zone isn't in these ranking positions the highest ranked, not yet qualified, of any zone will qualify.

Field Hockey

Competitors Limit: 384 players (12 teams of 16 per gender) - of which 32 players (1 team per gender) are allocated to the host nation:
Limit per Nation: 32 players (1 team per gender)

The hockey qualification system for men and women are identical:

- The winner of each of the 5 continental championships (Africa Olympic Qualifying Tournaments, 17th Pan-American Games, 17th Asian Games, European Nations Championships, Oceania Cups)
- The 6 highest placed teams in the semi-finals of the 2014/2015 Hockey World League, not qualified through continental qualification or as the host country, will qualify.

Football

Competitor Places: 448 (16 mens teams, 12 womens teams) - of which 1 team per gender is allocated to the host nation.
Limits per Nation: 32 (1 team of 16 players per gender)
Age Limits: All players bar 3 per team must be aged under 23.

For men's football the qualifers will come from:

- 3 highest placed at The 2016 AFC U-22 Championship
- 3 highest placed at The 2015 CAF U-23 Championship
- 2 highest placed at The 2016 CONCACAF Men's Olympic Qual
- 1 highest placed at 2015 South American Youth Championship
- 1 highest placed at 2015 OFC Olympic Men's Championship
- 4 highest placed at 2015 UEFA European Under-21 Championship
- 1 highest placed at CONCACAF/CONMEBOL play-off.

For women's football the qualifiers will come from.

- 2 highest placed at 2015 AFC Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament
- 2 highest placed from a TBC CAF championship
- 2 highest placed from a TBC CONCACAF championship
- the highest placed at the 2015 OFC Olympic Women's Championship
- 3 highest placed at a TBC UEFA Women's Championship

Golf

Competitors: 120 (60 per gender) - of which 1 per gender is allocated to the host nation.
Limit per Nation: 4 (2 per gender)

The 60 players for each of the men’s and women’s competition. The IGF will utilise the official world golf rankings to create the Olympic golf rankings as a method of determining eligibility. The top-15 world-ranked players will be eligible for the Olympics, with a limit of four players from a given country. Beyond the top-15, players will be eligible based on the world rankings, with a maximum of two eligible players from each country that does not already have two or more players among the top-15.

Gymnastics

Artistic Gymnastics

Competition Places: 196 (98 men, 98 women) - of which 1 per gender is allocated to the host country and tripartite commission.
Per Nation Limit: 1 team of 5 athletes, 1 individual athlete per nation unless appartus medal winners at the 2015 World Championships

Team Qualification

- 80 gymnasts (40 per gender) will qualify from the 2015 World Championship - the nations ranked 1st-8 in the team rankings will recieve a team quota place of 5 gymnasts.
- 40 gymnasts (20 per gender) will qualify from the 2016 Olympic Games Test Event - the nations, not already qualified, ranked 1st to 4th will recieve a team quota place of 5 gymnasts

Individual Qualification

- 30 Gymnasts (18 men, 12 women) will qualify from the 2015 World Championship - individual apparatus medal winners from nations that haven't qualified a team.
- At least 42 gymnasts (18 men, 24 women) will qualify from the 2015 Olympic Games Test Event - the best ranked athletes from the competition from nations that haven't qualified a team.
- Minimum continental representation should be 2 from Africa, America, Europe and Asia and 1 from Oceania - quota places will be provided to meet this to the best ranked team in the unrepresented continent

Competition Places: 96 (96 women) - of which 6 are allocated to the host nation and 1 is allocated to the tripartite commission
Limits Per Nation: 7 (Group Competition: 5, Individual Competition: 2)

Group Qualification

- The nations ranked 1st to 8th in the 2015 World Championship group competition will gain a quota place
- Should a continent be unrepresented from those 8 the best ranked of the continetn up to 2 continents, will be qualified. If it is met, then the 9th and 10th teams will qualify
- 3 groups will qualify from the 2016 Olympic Games Test Event - the 1st to 3rd best ranked eligible nations (i.e not qualified from World Championship) will qualify

Individual Qualification

- An individual gymnast may only obtain one quota place for nation
- 2015 World Championships will qualify gymnasts ranked 1st to 15th with a maximum of two per nation
- 2016 Olympic Games Test Event will qualify gymnasts ranked 1st to 6th with a maximum of one per nation.
- Minimum continental representation should be at least 1 quota place per continent, placces will be offered to meet this to the best ranked unqualified athlete from the unrepresented continent

Trampoline

Competitors: 32 (16 per gender) of which 1 is allocated to the host country and 1 is allocated to the tripartite commission.
Limit per Nation: 4 (2 per gender)

Qualification

- The 2015 World Championships will qualify gymnasts ranked 1st to 8th in each gender ranking of the Finals. Max 2 per nation
- The 2016 Olympic Games Test Event will qualify 1st to 5th as per the men's and women's ranking results of the qualifying round. Max 1 per nation
- If continental representation is not met through these and the host country and tripartite commission places then the best ranked male gymnast or female gymnast which is not appropriately represented will qualify a name quota place.
- Excess places will be allocated to the next best ranked eligible nations as per individual rankings from 2016 Olympic Games Test Event

Competitors: 386 (221 men, 145 women + 20) - of which 20 are allocated to the tripartite commission across both genders and 7 from each gender are allocated to the host nation.
Limit per Nation: 14 (7 men, 7 women) or 1 athlete per event

- World Ranking List refers to it as of the 30th May 2016
- 154 Men's Direct Qualification places will be qualified by the first 22 athletes on the IJF World Ranking List for each weight category, to a maximum of 1 athlete per nation, being qualified.
- 98 Women's Direct Qualification places will be qualified by the first 14 athletes on the IJF World Ranking List for each weight category, to a maximum of 1 athlete per nation
- 60 continental qualification places will be qualified using the IFJ World Ranking List done individually for the continent according to their world ranking points. The quotas will be (Africa 24 (14 men, 10 women), Europe 25 (14 men, 11 women) Asia 20 (12 men, 8 women), Oceania 10 (7 men, 3 women) Pan America 21 (13 men, 8 women).

Modern Pentathlon

Competitor Places: 72 (36 per gender) of which 1 per gender is allocated to the host nation and 2 per gender are allocated to the tripartite commission.
Limits Per Nation: 4 (2 per gender)

For both the mens and womens competitions:

- 1st placed in the 2015 World Cup Final
- 1st place in the designated Continental Championship for Africa
- 5 highest placed in the designated Continental Championship for Asia
- 1st placed in the designated Continental Championship for Oceania
- 1st place in designated NORCECA continetnal championship
- 1st place in desinated South America continental championship
- 3 highest placed in designated Pan-America continental championship
- 8 highest placed in the desinated European continental championship.
- 3 highest placed at the 2015 World Championships
- 3 highest placed at the 2016 World Championships
- 6 highest placed on the world rankings as of 1 June 2016

Rowing

Competitor Places: 550 rowers (331 men, 219 women) - of which 1 per gender is allocated to the host nation and 2 per gender are allocated to the tripartite commission.
Limit per Nation: 48 (28 men, 20 women) or 1 boat per event

- At the 2015 FISA World Rowing Championship the highest placed boats in each class to the following quotas will qualify;
- Singles Sculls - 9 (Men and Women), Pairs - 11 (Men and Women), Double's Sculls - 11 (Men's, Men's Lightweight, Women's, Women's Lightweight), Fours 11 (Men's and Men's Lightweight), Quadruple Sculls - 8, 5 (Men's, Women's), Eight's - 5 (Men's and Women's)
- FISA Continental Championships will qualify to the following quotas
(Asia/Oceania; Men's Single Sculls 7, Men's Lightweight Double Sculls 3, Women's Single Sculls 1, Women's Lightweight Double Sculls 3)
(Africa; Men's Single Sculls 4, Men's Lightweight Double Sculls 1, Women's Single Sculls 4, Women's Lightweight Double Sculls 1)
(Latin America; Men's Single Sculls 6, Men's Lightweight Double Sculls 3, Women's Single Sculls 6, Women's Lightweight Double Sculls 3)
(Europe; Men's Single Sculls 3, Men's Lightweight Double Sculls 2, Women's Single Sculls 3, Women's Lightweight Double Sculls 2)
- The FISA Final Qualification Regatta will qualify boats as in the quotas below:
(2 for Men's Pairs, Men's Double Sculls, Men's Fours, Men's Quadruple Sculls, Eights, Men's Lightweight Fours, Women's Double Sculls, Women's Quadruple Sculls, Women's Eights and 4 for Women's Pairs)

Rugby Sevens

Competitors Limit: 288 players (12 teams/144 players per gender) - of which 1 team (12 players) is allocated to the host nation.
Per Nation Limit: 12 (1 team)

For men's qualification:

- 2014/2015 IRB Men's Sevens World Series - team's ranked 1 to 4 in the final rankings of the season will qualify. (England will act as Great Britain for the purpose of qualification from the IRB Series - this does not exclude other home nation's players being in the olympic team)
- 2015 IRB Regional Association Men's Sevens Championship - The winner of each of the regional championships will qualify.
- The winner of the final Olympic Qualifying Tournament will qualify

For women;s qualification

- 2014/2015 IRB Men'a Sevens World Championship - team's ranked 1 to 4 in the final rankings of the season will qualify. (England will act as Great Britain for the purpose of qualification from the IRB Series - this does not exclude other home nation's players being in the olympic team)
- The winner of each of the 2015 IRB Regional Association Women's Sevens Championships will qualify.
- The winner of the final Olympic Qualifying Tournament will qualify

Sailing

Competitor places: 380 (217 for men, 163 for women) - of which 15 places (8 men, 7 women) are allocated to the host country and 4 places (2 per gender) are allocated to the tripartite comission.
Limit Per Nation: 15 (8 men, 7 women)/1 boat per event

- 138 places will be drawn from the 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships with the highest ranked in each discipline to a quota qualifying.
(Quotas for men will be Windsurfer 18, One Person Dinghy 23, One Person Dinghy (Heavyweight) 12, Two person Dinghy 13, Skiff 10,)
(Quotas for women will be Windsurfer 13, One Person Dinghy 19, Two Person Dinghy 10, Skiff 10)
(Qutas for mixed event Multihull will be 10)
- 47 places will be drawn from the individual event 2015 World Championships for the events will be qualified.
(Quotas for men will be Windsurfer 6, One Person Dinghy 9, One Person Dinghy (Heavyweight) 4, Two person Dinghy 6, Skiff 3,)
(Quotas for women will be Windsurfer 6, One Person Dinghy 4, Two Person Dinghy 3, Skiff 3)
(Qutas for mixed event Multihull will be 3)
- 75 places will be drawn from the continental qualification events to the quotas below.

Shooting

Competitor Places: 390 shooters (across both genders). The are 24 places allocated to the tripartite commission (across both genders). The host nation is allocated 9 places - 5 men, 4 women). Once these are accounted for 214 men and 143 women can qualify.
Limits Per Nation: 30 shooters (18 men, 12 women) to a maxium of 2 per event.

- To be eligible to participate all shooters must have achieved the Minimum Qualification Score (MQS) for their event in a designated Qualify Competition between 1st August 2014 and 31 March 2016. These standards are
(Men 50m Rifle Prone - 587/615,0* 50m Rifle 3 Positions 1135, 10m Air Rifle 570/595,0*, 50m Pistol 540, 25m Rapid Fire Pistol 560, 10m Air Pistol 563, Trap 112, Double Trap 118, Skeet 114)
(Women 50m Rifle 3 Positions 555, 10m Air Rifle 375/392.0*, 25m Pistol 55, 10m Air Pistol 365, Trap 58, Skeet 60)
*First score applicable to full ring scoring, second score applicable to decimal scoring.

Each of the seperate shooting events at the 2016 Olympics will draw there competitors from quotas, maximum of 2 per nation per event, with all places allocated to the nation. The systems are as follows:
- 2014 ISSF World Championships - A total of 64 across all disciplines to quotas.
- 2015 ISSF Shotgun World Championship - A total of 2 from each of the 5 shotgun events
- 2015 ISSF World Cup in Rifle/Pistol (Munich) - A total of 24 from all Rifle/Pistol events
- 2015 ISSF World Cup in Rifle/Pistol (Changwon) - A total of 24 from all Rifle/Pistol events
- 2015 ISSF World Cup in Rifle/Pistol/Shotun (Gabela) - A total of 34 from all Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun events
- 2015 ISSF World Cup in Shotgun (Larnaca) - A total of 10 from all shotgun disciplines
- 2015 ISSF World Cup in Shotgun (Al Ain) - A total of 10 from all shotgun disciplines
- Africa Continental Championship - 11 across all disciplines
- America Continental Championships - 31 across all disciplines
- Asia Continental Championships - 35 across all disciplines
- European Continental Championships - 48 across all disciplines
- Oceania Continental Championship - 18 across all disciplines

Table Tennis

Competitor Places: 172 (86 per gender) - of which 2 (1 per gender) are allocated to the host country and 2 (1 per gender) are allocated to the tripartite commission)
Limits Per Nation: 6 (3 per gender) further limited to 2 singles athletes and 1 team of 3 athletes)

Singles Qualification

The qualifiers for the singles competition will be:

- 6 highest ranked in the Africa Continental Qualification Tournament
- 11 highest ranked in the Asia Continental Qualification Tournament
- 11 highest ranked in the European Continental Qualification Tournament
- 6 highest ranked in the Latin America Continental Qualification Tournament
- 3 highest ranked in the North America Continental Qualification Tournament
- 3 highest ranked in the Oceania Qualification Tournament
- 22 highest ranked in the ITTF Singles Olympic Ranking List (an adjusted list removing continental qualifiers and limiting to two highest per NOC)

Team Qualification

Team qualification will be decided as follows:

- The highest ranked team from each content in the ITTF Olympic Team Ranking List which has qualified 2 athletes through singles will recieve and extra place to form a team.
- If in a continent no nation has qualified two athletes, then the highest ranked team from that content will be awarded two additional places.
- The remaining 9/10 (host dependent) teams will be decided by a) The 9 highest ranked nations with two singles athletes qualified will be eligible for an extra athlete to form a team. b) If less than 9 teams then nations with 1 singles athlete will be eligible for 2 extra athletes to form a team.
- If the team quota of 22 is not needed in full, excess places will be reallocated to Singles Ranking Qualification.

Taekwondo

Competitor Places: 128 (64 men, 64 women) - of which 2 per gender are allocated to the host country and 2 per gender are allocated to the tripartite commission
Limits per Nation: 8 (4 men, 4 women) - 1 athlete per event

- 48 (24 men, 24 Women) will qualify through WTF Olympic Ranking - top 6 in each weight category. Calculated after Grand Prix Final - December 2015
- 72 athletes (36 male and 36 female) will qualify through the five continental tournaments. Only open to nations with less than 2 in either gender from WTF Olympic rankings. These will be done as the top 2 per weight category in all but Oceania which will be top athlete per weight category)

Tennis

Competitor Places: 172 (86 per gender) - of which 2 are allocated to the tripartite commission
Limit per Nation: TBC - 12 (6 men, 6 women) - 4 athletes per singles event, 2 teams per doubles event.

Singles Qualification

- 56 Direct Acceptances - based on ITF World Ranking of 6 June 2015 (normal proffessional tennis rankings) - Max four per nation
- Best ranked host country athlete if not one of above qualifiers
- If any regional associations don't have a representative via Direct Acceptance then the best ranked athlete from that region will gain a place (if they are in the top 300)
- Olympic Gold Medallists or Grand Slam Champion who has not qualified through direct acceptance will qualify if they are in the top 200, if more than 2 the 2 with highest number of titles will qualify.
- If any places remain they will be allocated to the next best ranked nation with no representation in that event.

Men's and Women's Doubles Qualification

- 24 Direct Acceptances - based on ITF World Ranking List on 6 June 2016
- Provision that the team has been nominated as a doubles team and do not bring total qualifiers from nation above 6.
- Any region not represented will have their best ranked team qualify.

Mixed Doubles

- 12 Direct Acceptances based on ITF World Ranking List on 6 June 2016
- If any region is not represented the nest ranked team from that region will qualify.

Triathlon

Competitor Places: 110 triathletes (55 per gender) - of which 1 per gender is allocated to the host nation and 2 per gender are allocated to the tripartite commission.
Limits per Nation: 6 - Each nation is limited to three athletes per gender

The qualification system, mirrored for men and women is:

- 1 place allocated to the winner of each continental olympic qualification event (5 total)
- 3 places allocated to the three highest placed finishers at the 2015 ITU World Olympic Qualification Event
- 39 highest placed on the ITU Olympic Qualification List
- 5 highest placed on the ITU Ponts List

Volleyball

Competitors Places: 288 (12 teams of 12 per gender) - of which 1 team per gender is allocated to the host nation.
Limits per nation: 24 (1 team of 12 per gender)

The places for the Volleyball at the 2016 olympics will be allocated as follows, with both genders using the same system:

- The 1st and 2nd placed teams at the 2015 World Cup
- The best ranked team at each of the 5 continental qualification tournaments
- 4 highest placed from the World Olympic Qualification Tournaments.

Beach Volleyball

Competitor Places: 96 players (24 teams of 2 per gender) - of which 2 teams per gender (8 places) are allocated to the host nation.
Limit per Nation: 8 (2 teams of 2 per gender)

The qualification system for men and women's qualifications systems are the same and as follows:

- The World Champion nation will earn 1 place.
- The 15 highest ranked teams on the Olympic ranking list as of 13 June 2016
- The highest ranked team, not yet qualified, at each of the 5 continetnal world championships.
- The 2 highest ranked teams at the 2016 FIVB Beach Volleyball qualification Cup, (open to the 2nd and 3rd ranked in each of the continental cups)

Weightlifting

Competitor Places: 260 (156 men, 104 women) - of which 5 (3 men, 3 women) are allocated to the host nation and 10 (6 men, 4 women) are allocated to the tripartite commission
Limits per Nation: 10 (6 men, 4 women) - additional maximum of 2 athletes per event

The qualification system for men's weightlifting:

- 108 from the 2014 and 2015 IWF World Championships from their Team Classification over both championships. (using only 6 best athletes). (allocated to nation)
- 31 from 2016 Continental Qualification Events (5 from Africa and Oceania, 7 from Asia, Europe and Pan-America) (allocated to nation)
- 8 highest placed on the Olympic Qualification Ranking List (allocated to athlete)

The qualification system for women's weightlifting is:

- 67 from 2014 and 2015 IWF World Championship from their Team Classifications over both (allocated to nation)
- 24 from 2016 Continental Qualification Events (6 from Asia and Europe, 4 from Africa, Pan-America and Oceania)
- 7 highest ranked on the Olympic Qualification Ranking List

Wrestling

Competitors: 344 (228 men, 108 women + 8) of which 4 ungendered are allocated to the tripartite commission and 4 ungendered are allocated to the host nation
Limits Per Nation: 18 (12 men, 6 women) - 1 athlete per event

- 108 from the 2015 World Championship - 6 highest placed in each of the 18 Olympic weight categories
- 144 from the 2016 Continental Qualifying Tournaments (4 continents of Asia, Europe, Americas, Africa-Oceania) - top 2 in each of the 18 olympic weight categories. Not open to nations qualified through 2015 World Championship for the weigh categories they've qualified.
- 48 from the 1st 2016 International Qualification Tournament - First 3 male wrestlers and First 2 female wrestlers in each olympic weight category. Not open to nations qualified through 2015 World Championship or 2016 Continental Qualification Tournaments for weight categories they've qualified.
- 36 from the 2nd 2016 International Qualification Tournament - First 2 in each of the olympic weight categories. Not open to nations who qualified through the other qualification routes.
