Just wondering, does anyone know when we can apply for second year accommodation if we want to live on campus next year?

Hey guys and gals, the purpose of this thread is obviously if you wish to ask the university any questions in particular, I myself have just graduated with my combined honours degree in Psychology and Sociology and have been employed by the university itself to work in the social media department. Thus I should be able to give you insight on a number of things such as courses, accommodation, student life, night-life, societies and any general pointers for those of you whom are about to become Aston students for the next four years.

FYI - If you have questions about accommodation you should forward an email to [email protected]

Don't be shy.

Hi so basically im planning to do Optometry and my AS grades were AAB; A for Biology and A for Chemistry and a B for Maths. The problem is my GCSE Grades also is dual award science the same as additional science? as i got BC and on the website it says BB so would i get rejected on that basis? Ive applied thru UCAS but im just anxious and worried and how long does it take for Aston to make an offer?. Thank you

Hi Josh ,

Im thinking of entering Aston , I'm currently in 2nd year at my current uni , I've contacted the admissions team from the course i wish to pursue , they say i would have to start from year 1 again .
Im really unhappy at my current uni and have no motivation to work there , hence why I'm considering entering .
My questions are :

1. Do you think its too late me to apply now ?
2. They ask for current transcripts how will this speed up the process ?
3. My student finance will have to change , so if the application is successful how would the student finance work ? How much would i have to pay back ?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Sorry for the slow reply. I'm the only one who mans the TSR account for Aston and the holiday's have gotten in the way. I'm fairly certain that a dual science award will be accepted.

Presuming you're on AQA it looks as if the Dual Science Award is a new programme, but with a similar structure. Most likely the Dual Science Award was put into existence after the Optometry module descriptor was updated.

However if you still have any doubt, please contact the admissions team linked to Optometry, they should get back to you in the new year.

Hi,

Sorry for the slow response, the holiday's got in the way.

1) Not at all, you will be starting with next years cohort anyway.
2) It means they have the information required and may be able to give you an unconditional offer, essentially meaning you've got your place regardless of what happens on a level results day. It also means they don't have to contact your university to check your grades.
3) You should just have to log in and change your course and institution on the SFE portal, unfortunately you will most likely have to pay back everything you borrowed this year. However, if you're as unhappy as you sound it seems like it will be worth it in the long run. Alongside all the benefits Aston has with it's longstanding experience in graduate employment.

Anything else just give me a shout.

Hi Josh,
But would i get rejected because of having BC and not having BB for GCSE Dual award science ???
Ive got high AS Grades have done work experience for optom and sent my application off to Aston but my friend told me that i could get rejected
Are Aston lenient on GCSE grades ?
Sorry about the trouble its just that ive been waiting for an offer and im just really really really worried that i wont get an offer from Aston as its the only Uni im thinking of going to

WIth student accommodation, would you suggest private halls would be a good idea for first year? Is the experience pretty similar to halls owned by the uni?

Hi,

There will always be some leniency in the applications process, especially if you have carried on the requested GCSE subject at A Level. Unfortunately there is always an element of randomization when it comes to being offered a place. A number of things can effect the leniency of an offer, such as: Number of applicants, quality of applicants, course funding, staff availability, student resources ect.

I would suggest you have a chat with the admissions team related to our optometry course. Their email will be on the optometry course page. They will be able to give you a more substantial answer when it comes to the leniency they have when it comes to applications.

Good luck!

Hi,

As i'm sure you can understand, we have to promote our own accommodation as a university. However there are a number of benefits to living on campus opposed to private halls.

1) You literally live on campus, you can walk to the Monday morning 9am lecture, after waking up at 8:55am, opposed to the 25 minute walk you may have from private halls.

2) You will be living with Aston students, private accommodation may have students from neighboring universities. e.g. BCU and UOB.

3) 24 hour maintenance team. A lot of students praise the quality of our maintenance team, often when something breaks in private hall, there is often a longer waiting period.

However, if none of those are important to you, then there is no obligation to live in Aston accommodation and there are plenty of options available. The Advice & Representation Centre in the Students' Union should be able to help when it comes to that: http://www.aston.ac.uk/union/welfare/arc/

Is there a comparison of the types of accommodation anywhere? eg photographs

Without anything to base it on it's hard to know whether the more expensive rooms are worth it.

Hi,

Unfortunately there is no set reply time. The time to give an offer can differ between course. As a rough estimate, if you applied last year, you will most likely hear from us before the end of January. If you submitted your application today, i would expect sometime around late February.

Don't worry if you haven't heard from us in a while though, providing you applied via UCAS we will have your application and will respond.

Good luck!

Hello ,
Just a quick query
If I was to retake an exam paper which I hadn't put I was retaking on the UCAS form, would it change anything in terms of being offered a place?

I've realised that I got a very high A in one paper and a D in the other business paper, and have already sent my application off and received an offer, would I be able to retake this paper? or would it be not be allowed by the uni?
