I'm in the second year of a course with a optional placement year. It looks like i'm not going to find anywhere appropriate to do a placement, so I just thought I would double check that if I don't get a placement, I don't have to take a year out, or do anything like that? I should just go onto the final year of my course in September? (as long as I pass anyway)

Hi,

Sorry to hear you're having difficulty securing a placement. Which course are you studying? Placements are mandatory if you're in the business school, but optional on other courses.

I would suggest either scheduling a meeting with Careers + Placements to get some support (they will have a number of options you may not have considered if you're only applying to big name blue chip companies) you've decided you do not wish to do a placement and it isn't required by your course. You will be able to sit down with your personal tutor and head of the department to discuss transitioning directly into final year.

Hope that helps

Josh

Not sure about French but I'm a second year Computer Science student and we have about 9 hours of week of lecture (but we have quite a bit of tutorials and labs too). ^Kam

Hi,

Unfortunately, we don't offer this course as part of our online portfolio just yet, however, we are looking at expanding. It may not be as convenient as doing the said course online, but we do currently offer it in a part-time model, which can be done over a maximum of three years.

That may be more achievable if you have work/family/travel commitments.

Hope that helps

Hi Josh

Thank you for your response.

However it does say in the course content that this is available through the distance learning route? If this is the case, then it's misleading...

I am really interested in studying for this course.

Would this be available online in the foreseen future?

Apologies,

You had me slightly confused, the course is available for distance learning, however, it is not part of Aston Online.

I believe the difference being you may have to come onto campus for the occasional assessment, whereas Aston Online courses can be completed from the other side of the world.

Sometimes we trip over our own terminology. Oops!

Your best bet is to drop our postgraduate admissions team an email if you would like more information on whether the part-time nature of the course would be suitable for yourself.

Hope that helps

Thank you for clarifying that Josh.

However I've had an email response from the Postgraduate Admissions department and they said the course isn't available through Distance Learning...

So which is correct?
Now I am absolutely  with what is available!

Hi,

I'm really sorry for any confusion caused, I’ve been in contact with our admissions team to make sure we are giving you the most accurate and clear information.

What may have caused some confusion is the "Part Time/Distance Learning" term on our website. Usually this term is used to denote a course being part time and possibly suitable for distance learning and the commuting student, but not delivered solely online, like our Aston Online courses.

Your ability to study this course would be dependent on if the part time commitments are compatible with your current arrangements. Unfortunately this course is not delivered in block teaching or on weekends, so if you have current work commitments you would most likely need to commit one or two days a week to commute to our campus.

Once again, I’m really sorry for any confusion caused. If you feel this could be feasible then I would suggest having a chat to our admissions team for further information and possibly an exemplar timetable for part time teaching. Otherwise I would suggest keeping an eye on Aston Online, as we are looking to expand our portfolio and offer more courses.

Hope that helps

Josh

Hey guys and gals, the purpose of this thread is obviously if you wish to ask the university any questions in particular, I myself have just graduated with my combined honours degree in Psychology and Sociology and have been employed by the university itself to work in the social media department. Thus I should be able to give you insight on a number of things such as courses, accommodation, student life, night-life, societies and any general pointers for those of you whom are about to become Aston students for the next four years.

FYI - If you have questions about accommodation you should forward an email to [email protected]

Don't be shy.

Help!!! I think im going to fail my first year at uni. I really dont want to retake a whole year.
I wanted to know if aston still let you pass into second year even if i failed a couple of modules since “first year doesnt count”

And do you automatically get a chance to resit exams in august/september or do you have to beg for a second chance???

Reply 1012

Hey, I’m a final year student at Aston. I failed one module in first year and had to resit it in august, I think this year referred exams are 21st - 25th august. Apparently for some courses you only need at least a 40% average overall to pass but for mine (International Business and Spanish) we needed to pass each individual module. As far as I’m aware you can fail up to 40 credits and resit but I could be wrong, however they will definitely not make you beg to resit. If you failed the majority of your modules (and the resits) it is possible that you retake the whole year but I think you’re allowed three chances to sit an exam so you should be fine. Hope this helped.

Hi, hope this gets a reply soon, I’m trying to work out the accommodation fees and I saw that the first instalment is due in ten days and I can’t afford anything significant until I get my loan! Going to call student finance when I calm down and get the confidence but any help would be appreciated

Hey mediocremess.

Although we can't help as our accommodation is now owned by separate company Unite Students, their guidance online states: "Your first instalment must be paid before check-in. You will not be able to check-in if you have not paid. It's really important that your rent is paid on time. Your first instalment before moving in covers the first part of your tenancy".

I think this is as far as their flexibility would stretch, but maybe it's worth contacting them directly about your situation.
