Is Queens' poor?

I am beginning to worry about not applying to Christchurch now!

Rich colleges are not necessairly cheaper to live in - my rent (in a relatively rich college) is just over £11/night set to rise by over 30% over the next two years :frown:

Im sure there are plenty of peeps in a similar situation to me, it's not that i am particularly worried- things always seem to work out for me. It's just altho' never being a mathematical genius..it's going to be tricky. You see i'm already in debt, spent a year at uni abroad, so trying to pay that off as well. Now if i get 3 grand a year, i will have to find around 2 grand a year on top of that. It's funny, cos when i was at Pem at interviews, the 2nd years were going on about how Pem burns boats yearly that could have fetched at least 5 grand each!

Our cheapest accomodation, thanks to 2 years of great negotion, is now midpriced throught out the rest of uni for cheap rooms! The boat club does not burn boats worth five grand, more like 100 quid, and only do so cos we have veadship in summer eights (double at the mo!). Alos, the painting was given to us in the 50's and kept in a vault, and then sold for 750,000 when they couldnt get insurance.... This money is the JCR's and means that we can all have a lot of fun during the course of the year on JCR money
(hiring out filth for bops, free pizza and booze at meetings), why should we give this to college?

*scowls* from across St Aldates, I want pizza in my JCR meeting! Christ-church is facing 30% rent rises this year if the SCR have their way, so rich or poor endowments really don't count for as much as they're made out to.

Oh they go! What book grants have you recieved? And travel grants? Things like this are where we miss out!
Book grant = £140 over your time here.
Travel grants are applied for individually but are v big.

i suppose you have to separate college and JCR wealth don't you!

Indeed you do ...
What is book grant and what is travel grant? Do I qualify for this? I mean, do international students qualify? If I can get grant for my air ticket, I can go back home more frequently!

Travel grants are awarded for travel related to your subject - historians, linguists, archaeologists etc... might all have reasons for wanting to go abroad on an academic-related visit. If you submit your plans to the college/university, there is money around to help you fund the costs.

How do book grants work? Are they college or uni based? I don't know anything about them

book grants (in Ch Ch at least) are basically the college giving you up to £140 or two lots of £70 to buy the books you need (obviously when you brng them the receipts, they dont just give you the money for you to spend on anything!)

Incidently you will spend loads more than £140 on books over your time here but at least it goes part of the way.

I know <depressed> just shopped for this terms reading :frown:

Maybe the book grants are a college rather than uni-wide thing - def. haven't heard anything about them.

Yes, they are a college thing. We get a £50 book grant every year. We also get an extra-curricular grant of up to £100 in the first year which is usually used for sports/music/drama equipment/entering competitions, etc. My friend used hers to buy some shoes lol (well they were dancing shoes, or so she claims).
well, college based... Won't have too much expectation then, since I'll be in Pembroke

You're now in Pembroke, right? Which type of room did you choose? Since I've paid so much for tuition, I'd like to reduce other expenses to the lowest. However, I'm also worried if the band A room is too small. I'm taking Chinese zither with me, which is about 1.2 m long, is there enough room?

I was in a band b room...they are not huge, but big enought for your needs i would guess! Band A rooms may also be big enough, but it depends on where the room your get is...(i believe they are re-evaluating the room bands this summer tho)

Thanks a lot! I'll wait for the info pack to come. Hope they'll arrive as promised in May. But I heard that there was a postal strike again in Oxford

I think i may actually make a trip to Pembroke in May, got a friend there and will ask her to show me some of her friends rooms  She is in a Band D room and highly recommends it- however, financially that is not going to happen i don't think! :frown:

Lol! I don't know how people would take to me photographing their rooms! What would be interesting to know is the student-bathroom ratio in Band A/B rooms..
