Student loans should be enough, just learn to live off that. If you have to get a job then get one and stick with it.

My student loans only cover accommodation so I'm also going to have to get a job but in a uni city there will be plenty of job opportunities

It won't be too hard. You only need £30 a week for food and if student loans cover accommodation then you should be fine. Every job with reasonable hours pays over £30 a week. Any money over £30 can go towards supplies, going out with friends, take aways and whatever else students spend money on. Your parents could probably even afford to give you £30 a week.

Do you have a good student bank account? Santander and HSBC are the best. Santander offer a young person rail card worth £30 a year valid for four years as well as £1500 overdraft for first three years. HSBC offer up to £3000 overdraft in the first year and a £60 Amazon gift certificate. Both overdrafts are interest free.
