It's ethernet I think. You will get a cable when you are there so you shouldn't need anything.

That was amazingly quick, thanks!!

Ethernet?

I hope people have modern computers and laptops, otherwise you'll all have some problems
Mines about a year old, so it should be ok. We bought it specially for me going to Uni, and as an 18th present. If it doesn't work, it'll be gutting, especially as I still haven't managed to get all my files transferred yet from my dad's computer. Yes Yes, I procrastinate

I think a year old should certainly have it.

I had a problem on the PC it's about 4 years old and had not ethernet port. My laptop does. But you should check, if you have internet in your room
Well according to my dad I do, so yay ^^

Is ethernet just a wireless network?
Reply 9
No, ethernet is a plug that you will find on your case / laptop. It has a special plug that the cable fits into.

Look at this picture: http://www.balliol.ox.ac.uk/comp/ethernet/rj45_rj11.jpg

Look at the plug on the right, see there is a little picture above it? If you have an ethernet port, that picture will be above it, to the left, to the right, underneath

Well I would check, but then I'd have to climb under the table and curl into an uncomfortable position with a torch to find out (don't ask!). I'm assuming, given this is my computer, that I don't, or if I did, it relied on the CPU having the outer casing it started with, and not having had every single one of its components apart from the monitor, keyboard and mouse changed multipule times since I bought it! That, and the place I'm going to be staying in doesn't have the internet anyway. Thanks anyway though!

I had a laptop which broke in the first semester. I then had a computer which didn't have the port, so we bought a card that you put into the box in one of the spare slots and that creates the port, it isn't too hard to do. So don't worry anyone that hasn't got one.

I had the problem that all my slots were already used, but I didn't know you could do that

It won't work on a laptop though, unless there is some kind of adapter..
If your computer doesn't have ethernet capabilities, all you should need is a £10 10/100 PCI network card.

For those with laptops without an ethernet port (or a functioning one), you can get PCMCIA cards that'll do the job for you.

I'm not in the least bit techie and I can see I will have real probs setting up my computer! This ethernet thingy, where do I get one of those from? Is it straightforward setting up your laptop to receive email and stuff using the uni email address? My dad has always sorted my laptop, I don't know where to begin:eek: My dad said he'd sort it out for me before I leave NZ, but he won't be able to sort out email addresses and intranet and whatever else, will he?

I thought I'd just have to plug it in, no?

I am quite bright in other respects I might add, lol!!:p:

Getting Connected on Data Points is really easy.

If you already have an Ethernet port (RJ45), just conenct the cable, and plug into the wall.

Reboot (better than just restarting the connection. Less chance of crashing), and you will be conected,

If you have a laptop which doesnt have Ethernet (VERY unlikely!), then as mentioned before, a PCMCIA card (or PC Card as its now known) can be used to add the port.

One of my old laptops had Ethernet, but i'd blown the port out durin a power surge.
If that happens to you, you can use a USB network adapter.

Just looks like a little box with an ethernet port on one end, and a cable to a USB port at t'other.

You dont need to change any settings on your machine, as it sets itself up autmatically via the DHCP server.

If n e one gets stuck, the peer guides should be able to help out, or failing that, I'm happy to go round fixing machines for people.

Shouldn't come to that though. It should just work

Even though when you arrive you can put the cable in etc, you won't be able to access the internet because you need a username and password which you don't get until Mon/Tues/Wed of Freshers Week.

Yeah and you also have to put in a cd and load that up - it contains the internet you use resnet I think. That doesn't take long thought but it's that as well as plug in the cable.
