It varies. PhD/DPhil sipends are usually quarterly, although there are some exceptions. My MSc stipend, on the other hand, is in irregularly-sized monthly chunks. Almost always in advance though, arrears would leave you starving until the first chunk arrived.

Normally it's in advance but it will depend on how you are funded and your university. Some universities pay monthly, others quarterly, etc. Email UCL :p:

My stipend (MRC) was paid into my account by BACS on the last day of each month. As were nearly all of my friends (Wellcome, BBSRC, PARC)

But as Captain Shiny-arse says - it varies across funding bodies...

EDIT: Mine was paid in arrears, although you could get an advance for month 1 if needed...

Oi! Im your son! :p:
It also depends if you are on doctoral training initiative (DTI) or direct funding. The former is done through your university so it is they who will pay you (essentially through the monthly payroll) not the research council.

My boyfriend's funding is from a doctoral training account through the university and he gets paid in advance either on the first day or the last day of a month, I can't remember. I suppose for this type of funding it would depend on the university's policy.
