I'm not sure if I'm even buying the Fresher's pass. :P It's pretty expensive and paying it from here is pain in the ass.

do we actually need the freshers pass? I mean, if I dont plan to go to every single event, is it worth the 30 quid?
Reply 6
is a freshers pass needed for the freshers fair?

Has everyone received freshers information in the post?
I've only received information about websurf, should I have received anything else?

I think you only need the freshers pass for the night time events in the union. All the university organised events are free (freshers fair, tours of library,SRC things too I think) the thirty quid is basically covering the cost of the acts turning up. I'm not sure that you can pick and chose what events you want to go to at night though. I think it might be an all or nothing deal. I'm sure you can meet enough people, see enough things, during the day to not miss out but if I was 18 again I'd be going along at night!! (I'll be tucked up in bed with a horlicks by that time  )

Remember drink is ridiculously cheap in freshers week so it kinda balances itself out. if you think about a week of partying. I think I read a vodka and mix was 75p so if you drink 10 of them each night it works out at £13.50 for each of the 5 nights and you can see some good music have a few bevvies and meet lots of new people (who will have had similar amounts to drink, if you catch my drift!! - and if your not drinking your chances might still improve dramatically)

I got a leaflet/application form sent when my department sent me stuff (health check stuff etc needed for my course - which you probably wont get) Mind you it had details of what registration I had to go along to. Maybe they just think we are idiots and need to be told everything, lol.

From the back of the thing,

there is a phone no 0141 339 8541 (SRC - who organise it) or enquiries (at) src.gla.ac.uk

full info at gla.ac.uk/freshersweek You need two passport photos. (get more cause you'll use loads in your first few weeks! print them yourself it's cheaper)

@pollocmc yeah i catch your drift, but being in a serious relationship that doesnt really matter  so you think I cant get into the parties in the unions without the freshers pass? or d´you think i might be able to pay there? *confused*
I emailed SRC a few days ago, and they said you could both fill in the application for a fresher's pass and pay for it once you're in Glasgow. Just go to the SRC office.

I think evening events will require a pass (bouncers on the door etc.) daytime events in the unions probably not. (they want to give everyone access as they want you to see round and join) If I can remember that far back we used to just sit in the beer bar (in the basement of the GU) and take part in the quizzes, drinking competitions etc at night - now that is sad. I don't think you needed you pass for them but any of the acts you did. I don't think you could pay on the night either. Maybe once you get over here and get a feel for the place and maybe see what your flatmates are doing you can decide then. you have all day on the first monday of freshers week to decide if you want to go at night. My advice would be to go for it, pay the money, grumble about it like everyone else but have a brilliant time and it will bring a smile to your face for years to come and you'll have lots of stories to tell.

In saying that Glasgow is a fantastic city for things to do at night so there is loads else to do.

I'll be going to the reseach club at nights which is for mature (ha ha) and postgraduate students where we can play dominoes and bingo - but it's free during freshers week, lol.

Quote from other freshers thread:

...the £30 pass gets you free entry into all events organised by the university and the unions in Freshers week- although I'm not sure if that applies to big music gigs etc, but certainly for most things. You don't need it though, I never bought one and got on fine. Most people I know didn't have one either and were fine too.

I'd definitely go along to Freshers week as a non Weegie. It is a chance to meet people and get involved in the numerous societies and events that are all across campus and beyond. You don't need to be into drinking and clubbing to do stuff at night- there's plenty of theatres, cinemas, and other groups such as poetry, art, and singing clubs that meet up in the evenings. The university is your oyster! If you have any queries about what's on in Fresher's week when you're there, phone nightline and they'll help out. They'll also listen to you if you need to speak to someone about feeling a bit homesick, lonely, depresseed etc. Incidentally they're also looking for volunteers if anyone is interested....Good luck, and have a great time! Scruffs.."

I find it quite enlightening.
I'm pretty sure you won't need the freshers pass to get into any events, all it's for is a way of pre-paying for everything up front which also saves a bit of cash if you were to go to every event. To get into the unions u'll probably need your student card which you get once u've registered, regardless of if you have a freshers pass or not.

I just phoned the src enquiries no. to check and was told that you can't pay to get into individual events and that "some" day events "may" require you to show your freshers pass. Of course it may be different on the day - I have no experience of that.

(for Glasgow btw - others may be different)
