Economics "Chances"

WannabeEc:

To get a random couple of weeks during the summer, knowing someone is really important. Sending cold letters (i.e. to people you don't know) will only really work with much smaller companies. However, if you are a taking a gap year, there are loads more options - several firms, such as Deloitte & Touche and PriceWaterHouseCoopers, offer 6 month long programmes, paying well in exess of £10,000. (These are clearly very competitive, but if you think you're in with a chance of an Oxbridge Economics place you have nothing to fear).

im sorta in the same position as you adk, doubt il be as strong a candidate as you but il try my best. if you dont mind me asking how did you arrange yur work experience??? ive tried with a few places and most havent responded positively. ive been told you really need to know someone working there to get in. was that the case for you or did you just apply normally?? anyway good luck mate

Hi mate,

Yeah I know people who work at those companies, so they were able to arrange it for me quite easily, rather than going through the normal procedures.

As much as people say that it's the qualifications etc. that get you far, they only get you a certain way. Who you know is, I think, a big part too.

The big City firms don't offer summer 'work experience' as such, but only internships or longer placements, which are a few months long. You should try writing to smaller firms; that way, you're in with a better chance. In my experience, cold letters don't get you very far, unless you're quite lucky.

I did Work Experience in Year 10 at an Insurance Brokers (regional work mainly I think, but some pretty big clients) and they have a Financial Services and Investments part of the whole company (which I figured was in some way vaguely related to Economics). Thus, applying there and hoping for a reply but they loved me in Year 10 so all should be good

This is a good example of a way to get work experience - go to a company for a bit of shadowing or whatever, act really keen, do any work they give you really well (even if it is hugely boring). If you impress 'em, next time round they may agree to give you a more concrete post. If you really impress 'em, they may even offer you a paid post without you even asking.

Not at uni just yet. However, for various reasons, spent bloody ages doing research about them (though I wish I hadn't).

EDIT: To clarify, I am holding an offer to read this from 2004.

 GAH! It would be sickening if you had an EEE offer...but then again, I wouldn't be surprised.

Is he/ she THAT clever?!

I don't have a EEE offer, for a number of reasons:
1. I'm not a genius
2. I don't think Oxford gives matriculation offers
3. Cambridge, which does, gives out EE, rather than EEE offers.

Haha. Why would they give an EE offer? Surely they can't want someone THAT badly!

What is your offer?

My offer is AAB.

And yes tehy can want peopel really badly.

Cambridge give unconditional offers to people still at school.
Trinity Cambridge gave Paul Jeffries, who's been on the IMO team since he was 14 (and for the last few years has been the best by miles), and is also in the IIO team (and is the best by miles on the team), an unconditional offer.

It doesn't hurt that he's probably already done 3 A-levels (he's doing 10 in total) and is, so far as I know, the most intelligent school-age person in teh whole country.

Of course, it could be that they gave him that offer coz he's a nice guy. But I'm not sure that is the answer....

IMO=International Maths Olympiad. Only 6 people in the country make the UK team each year, and he's done so about 4 times in a row now.

IIO=International Infomatics Olympiad (i.e. computing). I'm not sure how many people qualify for that team, it's probably between 4 and 6, but it doesn't matter coz he's the best in the team.

Ah OK I know what you mean.

A few boys from my school are in the Chemistry and Maths teams.

I look forward to meeting him in October then. I'd like to see what his social skills are like (not suggesting they don't exist, just curious as to how he finds the time)

I've met him, so have a couple of people I know...seems like a normal, nice kinda guy. Just from looking at him you wouldn't know he's particularly academic.
