My ear!

on thursday morning i woke up and couldnt hear out of my left ear. I assumed it had just got blocked or something and left it hoping it would go away. However it hasnt improved. I've tried the ear drop things 3 times but that hasnt helped at all.

Theres also a whooshing/ringy noise and occasionly it starts to hurt (painfully!).

Any ideas what has happened? What to do? If its still like this on monday i'll get an appointment at the doctors but it might be a while till they can fit me in.

hearing is exceptionally important. Book an appoinment to see the doctor, if the pain gets worse take some pain killers! Hope that helps.

Get to the doctors immediately.. If it's what I think it is then you need to get seen to ASAP.

The same thing happened to me last year, at around May-ish... Tell me, at any time did you hear a faint popping, or squeaking sound? Cos that happened to me, I tried the ear drops, this went on for a week, then a lot of puss started to come out of my ear... and then the same thing happened to my right ear shortly after...

It turns out that I caught an ear infection, and as a result both my ear drums burst! I was completely deaf for a few weeks, and hard of hearing for a few months after... but I was given antibiotics by the ear specialist, and they healed up nicely.

yeah my bf had an ear infection that made him constantly throw up, feel really cold and he couldn't eat anything for a few days = not nice!!! silly ears!

That's really weird...

But yeah, since my drums burst, I started to feel sick as well... I couldn't see straight, I lost my balance...

It turns out your ears control a LOT of things in your body

Well it could be either wax or an ear infection really. Do get seen by a doctor.

I don't think your deafness would have been caused by just the ear drum's perforation - my left ear drum had completely collapsed inwards and I still had some hearing. Similary my right ear drum has partially collapsed - yet my hearing in it is almost normal. The group of three bones which vibrate in the middle ear I believe are more important. Though an infection and gunk in the ear would certainly not help hearing!

if you have been using ear drops to help with wax you should use olive oil instead, its much better for your ears in general and everyone is supposed to do it once a week. Hopefully it will just be a blockage as its still only in one ear, if this is the case you will have your ear syringed, I promise you, its so much fun! If you do have an infection the doctor will hopefully see you quick because you might need antibiotics

ear infeeeection.
ye'd best go check it out, i get a horrible feeling like that when i have a cold or something though.

Yep sounds like an ear infection, the funny sounds are probably your eustachian tube playing up meaning the pressure in the ear can't equalise

If it is this then using drops etc won't help because the problem is behind the ear drum where drops can't reach

(I have a dysfunction with my ears and eustachian tube so I know how you feel, should clear up quickly with antibiotics though  )

you might need someone else to help you but basically get some cotton wool pads, fold one in half and dip the pointy edge bit into some olive oil, then lie on your side with your head on a pillow, grab your ear and pull it out from your head, and squeeze the cotton wool into your earhole, about 3-4 drops but anything extra will come out so don't worry if too much goes in. lie on your side for a bit so it can go in, and then flip sides and do the other ear! If you think you have really waxy ears it might help to sleep with a towel on your pillow, because it should all fall out over the next week, also if you can't hear very well its fine to do it every night. (says my doctor, don't want anyone thinking I am a medic!)

It helps if you warm the olive oil (and only olive oil, not vegetable or engine!) slightly, but obviously don't make it too hot

I have never tried warming it up but I see why that would help. My god no, definitely not any other kind of oil! If you try and get it on your ear on your own put a towel over you or something in case the oil drips. I just get my mum to do it though..

I had the great fun of putting it in my dad's ears. He's also made me trim his eyebrows

It may not necessarily be an infection, in case the more severe stories sound scary! I have had problems with my ears most of my life, but nothing that having my ears syringed or wax hasn't sorted out. Often I will fall asleep and wake up on my ear, and then find I can't hear out of it. Having a little wiggle around the outside of the ear sometimes fixes it for me, or ear drops over a few days. I would, however, go to the doctor to be on the safe side.

I had a similar thing (not as bad as some people hear with the drum-bursting, luckily) but it was an infection and I caused it by using a cotton bud which I now know not to do! Don't use them... ever (in your ears anyway!).

Went to the Doctor's and got an antibiotic spray, took about a week to sort out (was in both ears at one point) but it was fine after just over a week.

It was like if I put my hand over my ear I can't hear, but with some pain in there as well.

Go to the doctor, get it sorted.
