Yeah, there are few things more annoying than students getting comptetitive and crazy about politics. The debating club at my school was full of people who were quite good at arguing, and quite good at beaking ideas down, but essentially stupid and unlikeable.
Political debate (by students who's egos prevent them from ever listening to each other's points), in the way I've seen it so far, is spectacularly pointless. People say it "sharpens your mind", but in my experience it sandpapers away any interesting ideas you may have once had and replaces them with blunt phrases like "In response to your point..." "I think it is naive to suggest..." etc.
If any Student Active in Politics (SAP) asks you why you think something, the answer is "because".
