I do maths and psychology and found psychology harder and I am expecting a lower grade in it.

I bet all these science people who are dissing psychology/sociology etc. have never taken any of them.

Maths was a piece compared to psychology in my opinion. But Im sure there are people who wil say in their experience, it was the other way around.

As long as the subject is relevant to the degree you're aiming for it's not mickey mouse - if one were to do marketing media or summit, media studies would be immensely attractive. Btw, theatre studies is not a mickey mouse subject - again don't take it but I know for a fact they do pretty much the same things as they do in Eng Lit - except it's plays they analyse rather than books (plus the drama side). Cambridge accepted it as an academic subject for NatSci (I know someone who did that, now graduated with a first).

theatre is a lot like english lit although it depends on the exam board because edexcel don't do all the analysing and studying of plays for the exam like AQA. and the drama side is pretty simple providing you can put together a play..again though edexcel is a lot different and is more scripted. That annoys me slightly because edexcel seems SO much easier from what i have heard...

I do (did last year) maths and psychology for AS and can say that I found psychology a joke of a subject. I got A's in both subjects (with 294/300 for Psych). Still, if you want an easy AS/A Level I suppose..

I did music. Couldn't stand it. But it is hard learning all the theory (from scratch). Fortunately for me I did grade 5 theory ages ago and that's the standard at A level so it wasn't too bad. It's not mickey mouse (a biased opinion of course) but it is a bit gay.

Drama probably isn't mickey mouse though I find it hard to believe looking at all the gimps who do it in our school (basically all the gay people... yes I mean actually homosexual).

I haven't done Media Studies so I haven't got a clue. But it probably is mickey mouse.

I reckon doing further maths is the best thing ever. Only 3 do it in our school and we all sit there with P4, P5, P6 while everybody else is stuck on P1 for the whole year. Hahaha.

When we sit around playing cards or whatever we sometimes see the Leisure and Tourism GNVQ people walking around. Haha. We can't help but make comments about how they are only in it to get the crappest qualification possible so they have a chance at life hehe. (no offense  )

And finally. I love the phrase "mickey mouse". One time my maths teacher was doing a question with us on the board. At the end he said, "I like this question. It's got a bit of everything in it. Some use of trig identities here, then differentiation, then use of the equation of a straight line, then some factorization and solving, a bit of mickey mouse maths down here (referring to plugging values into an equation), then some use of the quadratic formula here..." etc. haha. I couldn't stop laughing when he said that.

So far on this board the following A-level subjects have been deemed as piontless/unrespected/mickey mouse/ a joke:

Accounting
R.S
Media Studies
Art
Film studies
Business studies
General studies
Sport studies
Theatre studies
Philosophy (its true!)
Geography
Sociology
Drama
Textiles
Dance
I.CT
Law
History of Art
Photography
Psychology
English Lang
Critical thinking
Health and social care
Leisure and Tourism
Classics
Biology (some weirdo said this on the fact that the exam mentioned the word "hedgrerow"!)
Music

These subjects have been deemed as "proper"
History
English (comb or Lit)
Maths
Physics
Chemistry
Computing
Economics

According to the "intelligence" on this board, that means there are 25 mickey mouse subjects and 7 proper subjects. Either there is something hugely wrong with our A-level system or the people on this board are just totally mental!

And trust me, people have dissed Geography, Classics and Biology on this board

I think you should add Further Maths to the "proper" list.
The head of maths at my school takes the piss out of Media Studies as do all the staff who teach proper subjects! The media studies teachers are actually embarassed by their own subject.

Law is not a "Mickey Mouse" subject.

I agree. Otherwise why would UCL or KCL accept it?

Maybe we need to define 'mickey mouse'.

There seem to be a couple of common themes.

If a subject is 'hard' then it is not mickey mouse.
If I am doing a subject then it is not mickey mouse.
If it is traditional then it is not mickey mouse.

mmmmmmmm

OK I'm prepared for flack on this one, call me a troll if you like.

Maths is a mickey mouse subject. (talking about GCSE - A Level here, not uni)

It is MM because it involves no origional thought. It requires you to demonstrate techinques such as applying formulae.

It does not require critical thinking. It requires you to be able to regurgitate concepts not develop them.

It's emperor's new clothes. Have you noticed how proud parents are if their child takes maths at A level? There is a perception that if you do maths you are clever.

Whether a subject is Mickey Mouse or not is relevant. I remember my brother telling my cousin she was taking MM subjects at A level. She took Sociology and Economics (can't remember what else).

My brother did what he considered 'proper subjects'. Biology, Business Studies and Government and Politics.

And basically, does it matter?
Most people will not require any more than basic arithmetic in their lives

Exactly
okey...i did Music (supposedly mickey mouse subj), Maths, Chemistry & English Lit.

compared to my other subjects, music did seem easy. but not everyone would be able to do a-level music. different ppl find different things difficult..i know of ppl who have gone on to cambrdge, etc who would find music hard as other ppl find maths, chemistry, biology hard.
its a tad judgmental to say something is not a "proper" subject when u probably dont even study it. werent a-levels designed for ppl to specialise in things theyre good at and things they have an interest in?? if thats the case then no subject should be classed as mickey mouse or not "proper"
