Calorie question

Basically I have no idea about calorific content but I know that you should be eating at least 1200 a day. I've just had a lecture from my mum that I'm not eating enough at all so I was wondering if anyone could help me out by giving me a rough estimate as to how many calories I'm eating in an average day.

A pretty standard diet for me would be:

breakfast: 1.5 weetabix with skimmed milk and half a banana OR half a banana on one slice of wholemeal toast

lunch: medium plate of lettuce and tomato with half a tin of tuna and an apple OR 3 egg white omelette, half a tin of baked beans and an apple

snack: an apple OR a peach - sometimes have both though

tea: chicken breast with veg OR tuna steak with veg OR portion of vegetable lasagne (made with fresh tomato sauce and a bit of grated cheese on top) with salad OR two cod fishcakes with veg OR medium portion of pasta with tomato sauce and salad - something along those lines anyway

snack: one or two apples, a 50cal WW yoghurt, and sometimes a bowl of 2 shredded wheat with skimmed milk

I'd really appreciate any help anyone could give me just so that, if I'm really not eating enough, I can adjust what I'm eating.

Couldn't you just add it all up as you go along through the day? Apparantly women are meant to eat 2000 a day and men 4000. Personally I think that's rubbish as hardly any get to 4000.

1.5 weetabix? Does that not piss people off in your house? it pisses me off when I only have 1/2 a slice of bread left.

Why not have like salmon instead of tuna, and whole eggs rather than just egg whites.

The almighty Yahooey says that's at most 1000 calories, quite probably less than that. Here's how he works it out:

Half a banana + slice of toast: 130 calories

Half tin of baked beans + apple: 200 calories

Apple + peach: 150 calories

Vegetable lasagne: 300 calories? Depending on the size.

2 apples + yoghurt = 180 calories

Total = 960 calories

More protein needed.

I would if I knew how many there were in everything but I don't have a clue!

And no, the half a weetabix doesn't bother anyone cos I'm the only one that eats it.

But thanks, that's given me a vague idea so I know I can afford to be eating more.

What! It's 2000 for a woman(but i'd say to maintain weight its more like 1500/1600) and 2500 for a man! I don't think it's possible to eat 4000 calories a day and if you did...well

Back to main post, it sounds very healthy but slightly under the daily amounts maybe eat some extra toast or a small amount of fat like some nuts or something...

I wouldn’t worry about it unless you are underweight. As long as you are listening to your body and eating when you are hungry then you will be fine. Personally I think government statistics are rubbish as they don’t take into account peoples activity level, rate of metabolism, height or age.

I thought it was 3000 but my mate started feeding me this crap about it being 4000. He apparantly had a source from some health department. I really don't know...

I get through about 2500 a day, maybe 3000 on a good day. That includes a lot of shakes and a lot of food though! So 4000 average does sound very wrong.

I'm not underweight, I'm a few pounds over the lower bound for the 'healthy' weight for my height. I am, however, quite obsessive over what I'm eating and trying not to overeat or eat anything bad for me. I just don't want to take things too extreme and become ill, but I don't want to put on weight. I'm just trying to find the right balance really.

Well if the diets working good for you now then stay with it.

Well from what you have listed as your daily food intake your diet sounds amazingly healthy. Maybe you should relax and have some pizza and ice cream :p:

*eyes bulge*

I need amounts, I need weights, to calculate that! I am going to ignore your 'or' options, and just go for the first set. Which I make around 1000 calories.

Obviously your meal options will raise or lower this bar. Lasagne is way more than plain chicken and veg. There are a million calorie-counting sites on the internet and it isn't hard to weigh your food so if you want an accurate idea of how much you're eating, then do that.

Just looking at your diet... very healthy, but a bit low on calories. You could eat more. Women can eat up to 2000 calories per day, so aim for something up to that depending on whether you want to maintain, lose or gain weight.

I do occasionally but I don't particularly want them that often any more. My thing at the moment that I'm never sure whether I should is having another bowl of cereal in the evening, I always feel a bit guilty cos I've already eaten three meals but now I don't think I'm going to worry about it  That's my 'naughty' thing that I like to have - give me cereal over ice cream any day!

On some training course I did we had to eat like 7000 minimum to survive. Apparently in hell week for us seals they should eat upwards of 8000!

It depends on your lifestyle etc.

No I only drink water really, occasionally a smoothie or some orange juice, but no, I hate hot drinks - I always get impatient waiting for them to cool down and then burn my tongue

Hmmm strange. You train for really hard stuff in the army but don't eat that much. I doubt you need that much kilocalories.. they wouldn't all be used.

Yea, it was in the military  Basically from what I understand it gives you more of a chance to carry on and survive without collapsing from exhaustion

Says the person talking in third person. Weed isn't a person though is it. I read it correctly, you just spoke incorrectly.

The amazing Yahooey points out that weeds is a nickname for skinny guys. He assumed you would be intelligent enough to infer that, especially considering its common vernacular usage. He is sorry he gave you that much credit. Either way, you still read it wrong, seeing as at no point did he say that the bodybuilders didn't work out, but rather that the weeds didn't. It's a shame you aren't man enough to admit you were wrong.
