X Rated - the TV they tried to ban

I happened to be watching this programme on Channel 4 last night. It was basically a history of how swearing, sex and political incorrectness got onto our TVs.

What I found absolutely shocking - and hypocritical - was that the 'complainers' and their pressure group, were hugely offended because Caprice said '*****' on GMTV while talking about the Vagina Monologues, but were fine with someone of the downright racist programmes that were aired in the '70s because 'they were funny'.

I saw bits of it, too.

All I have to say is.... Chris Morris is an absolute legend. (That's the Brasseye guy).

Well don't expect me to stand up for complainers. Actually I find them extremely funny.

I always watch those things, even the repeats - they're channel 4's way of airing filth. Hurray. Lol.

I watched about 3/4 of it... to be honest wasn't that shocked by any of it! Youth of today, eh?

Clearly it was just an excuse to say "****" a lot.

are you referring to love thy nieghbour the sitcom from the 70's from what i remember from it the two main people in thier was a lowly white guy one can short of being an out and out bum and a successful black man. The biggest irony of it being that though the white guy was racist, it was the black man who had no such bias who had the most money and the most success

I know it's not particularly related, but I've got to say I'm amazed at what gets on the television these days. Really, I'm shocked it's not illegal.

I completely agree. You cant damn something as morally wrong when your laughing at blatantly racist 'comedies'.

Its a case of pot calling kettle black, but im sure they'll find that analogy funny too!
'Mind Your Language' looks hilarious. Going to have to get that on DVD.

I don't think you can judge a shows made in the 70's using todays moral norms. You have to look at it given the social contexts of the time. At the time this was acceptable.

It is like us judging the fact children were often forced into convenience marriages. A loathsome practice by todays standards, but no-one thought so at the time.

It may have been.

But then, in this day and age, sex on TV is acceptable. Why do people complain about that, and at the same time have no problem with racist stuff?

Because it doesn't offend them and they don't care. Simple, really.

Does raise the question though, can racist jokes be funny?

"How does every racist joke start?

Looking over your shoulder!"

Am I the only one who sees the hypocrisy in it?

A free press is a free press.

Hypocrasy in the people or hypocrasy in the program?

The program did it's level best to present a biased a view as possible of the complainers.

The people are people. They complain about things that offend them. For example, how many muslims protest programs lambasting christianity? Are they hypocrits too?

In the people.

I challenge you to find anyone who complains as loudly about something that they don't find offensive as they do about something they do find offensive.

If that makes people hypocrits then so be it.

They are just backwater idiots, nothing new there. I know we spend a fair bit of time in this forum trying to rationalize outright racism and idiocy but sometimes you have to just step back and accept the fact that some people are openly racist and stupid.
Yes, the views expressed were hypocritical.

But it is easier to moan about the clearly filthy (swearing and sex) than it is to analyse your own prejudices.

Human nature I am afraid.
