Girls in Computer Science

I'm getting a sneaking suspicion that I'm going to be the only girl in CS at Southampton. At the induction days at Southampton, Bristol and Cardiff (the only ones I attended) only had a spattering of female students. it's a little unnerving that I'll be in a class full of guys, not that I mind or anything.

So, just wondering if there are any female CS students lurking around the forum and if they can tell me the situation I can expect

I'm applying for CompSci in 2007, and I'm a boy :p:

But yeah, it does seem that way to be honest. I doubt you will be the only girl on your course, but at a guess there won't be many of you.

I was on a "headstart" course at Lancaster Uni's computing department - out of ~40 of us, all of us were male

You will defo be in the major minority. I went to 3 CS open days and saw about 5 girls all together.

I'll be able to tell you for sure when I start at uni in 2 weeks

I start my CS course at Loughborough in a few weeks, so if I remember, I'll let you know how many girls are on the course.

I saw a few other girls at interviews (at least one of which I saw twice!), but there weren't that many.

I wouldn't say it's a bad thing at all, since I've found that male-dominated classes can be hilarious

 Thanks guys. I don't start til 1st October so at least I can know what to expect before I go. There'll be plenty of other girls to be friends with at the halls and societies at least

I study A.I. at Sussex and there are about 7 girls in the Informatics department out of around 120 students. Sometimes this will increase though if girls from other subjects have chosen computing electives. It's not too bad, I generally hang around with people who I met in halls and on nights out though - the informatics lot aren't the most social.

When I did CS at Bath last year, there were about 100 people in my year and around 8 were girls. It wasn't a problem though, it was quite fun! I prefer hanging out with boys anyway

Some programmes incorporate other overlapping modules from outside the department (which does not apply for straight CS) such as economics or management and these generally have a larger intake of females.

I'm female and going to Cambridge for computer science. It was really funny - there's so few girls at the top end of computer science that I met many over and over again at different university interview days (Imperial, UCL etc.)

Think there was a thread on this last year - although that could have been in Engineering... Anyway, I'm just going into my 4th (and final!) year of a Computer Systems Engineering degree at Warwick. I'm pretty sure I'm now the only girl on the course (there was 1 other up until last year but I'm pretty sure she just did the BSc) but then there were only about 40-50 of us on the course anyway! Yeah, CS and subjects like that are pretty much male-dominated but I've never really found it a problem. You can meet plenty of people through halls, societies, etc. too

comptuing course at most levels are usally male dominated. dunno why tou. computing is not a phyical course like macnaics plumbing etc.

Two of my best friends doing my CS course are girls. Girls are vastly outnumbered by boys but there are still a few. I think I counted about 10 last time I was so bored in a lecture I decided to count the number of girls. I think there are roughly 100 people doing comp sci in my year, so 10% ain't bad.

Hey, there's nothing wrong with lads!!

No, i used to go to a drama class, and i was the only boy, don't worry. You'll think it's worse than it actually is!

You'll be fine!

 Thanks everyone. There's nothing wrong with being in a class full of guys, of course , but I'd still like a little girly chat now and then when I'm supposed to be working. Ah well, there's still plenty of people in the halls and societies to meet.

Maybe there will be some guys there in touch with their feminine side...

I'm a girl about to start Computer Science in Sheffield. The first task set is to do with a Penalty Shoot Out. Hmm. Still. The deputy head of the department is a woman I think..

Maybe we're a niche market...
