IBM ThinkPads on the other hand.. WTF? Yeah if you happen to have a couple of grand lying around you might be able to afford the same spec as one I got for a grand, but I bloody hate the things. Built well, but the software is ****, they're slow as anything and extremely overpriced.

I think I'll stick with my Acer!

They are more expensive yes but BOY are they worth it (also helps if you know someone who works there who can get employee discount ). Slow? No way. You don't have to keep their software on it anyway. And they are built to last

I got mine from studentlaptops.co.uk, they were no problem at all. Of course I never had any problems with my Acer laptop, so I don't know if they're any good apart from that, but I phoned up to order (wanted the double memory offer, which might be a good idea if its cheap, memory is one of the most important thing) and they were polite and helpful, and from what I remember pretty quick. I think the delivery is free too.

I once had a Acer laptop, a top of the range one when i bought it and after a year the hard drive blew up! I dont recommend them atal. They may be cheaper and you get high spec quite quickly but they dont last long!

I have a HP DV6095EA, which i now love. =] I got it cheap too becuase my friend works at comet.

As a heads up, if you wait until you're at Portsmouth you can get an extra 20% off most Apple computers/iPods etc. Just go here and to the "Higher Education" bit, but you'll need to be on a uni computer/a friends to access it. One of the MacBooks would probably hit your needs PLUS you get access to the super-cool club when you buy from Apple.

(as a note i am *completely* biased when it comes to recommending Apple)

even with 20% discounts they are still expensive and a pain in the ass if you are gonna cross platform :P

another note on laptops: Halls insurance that you get when you move in does NOT cover laptops you need separate insurance for them.

second year when you are in a house laptops are expensive to insure.

all my things to a value of £3000 etc + vacation cover = £41
all of my housemates things to a value of £2500 + her laptop = £103

Funny you should say that Stefan, even though the Uni tells you that laptops aren't covered, when I phoned up Endsleigh to insure my laptop they told me the Portsmouth insurance does cover it after all. Very confusing.

Also its worth noting that laptop cover, whilst more expensive, actaully also means you could spill drinks on it or whatever and they'll give you a new one, as well as damage outside the house, so that's why its more expensive.

Probably. But that's what insurance is about really isn't it. Who wants to give out money to people? :p:
