University: What to eat??

If you are starting University this year or are an undergraduate student already what are your plans for your diet? Do a lot of you eat a lot of ready meals and take aways?

I just bought myself a fruit and vegetable juicer and a blender ready for university as we have them in our family home, and i'm a HUGE fan. I really don't plan to live the supposed student lifestyle of Drink, Junk Food and lack of sleep (if thats really what its like for some people?)

I love going out on the town, nightclubs and just enjoying myself to the full (I love my life!) - I really don't need alcohol to be cool or improve my night but am aware that living a 'health freak' lifestyle (not my words) people are very harsh and claim you arent 'living'!

Any thoughts and ideas please post.
Jon

Can i just say, that i have also been thinking about the food business. So i brought two books off amazon. One being - 'nosh4students' the second being 'beyond baked beans budget'
Nosh4students is BRILLIANT. It has pictures and everything in it is well balanced, and quite healthy, and it measures everything in 'mugs' and such like so its REALLY easy! it ACE, get that and your sorted
Beyond the baked bean budget.......................well, it's okay. I guess i just can't be bothered to read it all. And it measures things in grams, which would be great except i haven't got any scales, and nor do i plan to buy some!

 get it! You won't be let down  Unless your MEGA MEGALY health conscious, which you don't sound, so get it!

I don't think that anyone will think of you as a health freak just because you lead a healthy lifestyle. I eat pretty healthily too and do quite a lot of exercise and intend to keep this up at uni because it makes me feel better about myself. I expect other people to understand this and not make a big deal of it.

Regarding food I am planning to eat lots of pulses (I'm a veggie) in things like curries, chilli etc and of course I will be eating the student staple pasta a lot. Quorn will also be on the menu as I can't get enough of the stuff and I will be eating loads of veggies too as I usally do at the moment.

I am not a big fan of ready meals or takeaways and as they are pretty expensive I am not intending to eat many at uni. I would rather cook myself something healthier and save the money for something else like clothes or a night out.

I have the nosh4students book and it is ok, a few good ideas...

I ended up eating lots of pasta - at least one meal a day lol, and stuff like tuna is always cheap and tasty so is a good option, goes with lots.

The sardine curry i made was pretty foul though, dont recommend that.

Sardine Curry? No bloody wonder.

I didnt have much in the cupboard at that time so it was a mix and match, it was the night of a pub crawl too...

Oooo the state of my en suite the next morning.

Reply 6

Not a pretty sight i bet.

You didnt make the curry after the pub crawl did you? because I'm suprised you didnt give yourself food poisoning. Actually even if you made it before the pub crawl, I personally wouldn't eat anything with sardines in before a stomach full of alcohol but I suppose its each to their own in the end.

What doesnt kill me can only make me stronger.:biggrin::biggrin:

No it was before the pub crawl...

Sardines are pretty safe... especially on toast... mmhmm.

erm how has nobody mentioned pot noodles!

urgh, I think I'll just stick to the good old cheese on toast option, can't go too wrong with that.

Not all people eat junk food constantly, especially in catered halls. I can eat in hall if I want to, which has meat and two veg type meals, but I sometimes make myself food too, especially lunches and stuff. As for myself, I never buy ready meals or take aways, but buy lots of fruit and salad, dried fruit and nuts etc. I got a juicer and smoothie maker for my birthday so am going to take that back with me. (though I don't think will be able to make juice for breakfast, it's so loud!) The only thing is fruit is so bloody expensive, but my parents would rather I spent a little bit more and were healthy than scrimping and living off baked beans! Some people may think you're wierd- it's a running joke among my friends that I eat more fruit in a day than they do in a week, but it's all light hearted. Most people won't give a stuff, don't worry about it!

Thanks for your comments, particularly Joanna and friendsfreak88. I'm going to try and make myself a juice for breakfast if I can - a quick one of course to save any prolonged loudness! My idea of a cheap juice is 4 carrots, 1 apple, celery and cucumber as my basic one. Eating this way is no exactly normal as the majority don't do it so thats why I think it may be wierd to a lot of people. they gotta try it though!

Have you heard of Jason Vale before, hes a legend!

Eat what you eat at home.

There is NO student stereotype to follow, it simply doesn't exist.

Does mummy still make your food? lol Man.

Yep, I got a book of his with my juicer- he's a bit cheeky! Though some of his recipes look nice. I've not tried any of them yet, just shoved in what we had in the fridge, which turned out nice, though I'm yet to try vegetable juice!

I managed to get cheese stuck to the top of the grill, which then set the grill on fire! Was a bit disasterous and took bloody ages to clean! I'll stick to good old pasta and pasta sauce in future!

Anything you can find in a toastie or anything in a jacket potato. That was my lunchtime meal sorted.

Ready meals are the devil. They're expensive, crap, and pointless.

Instead, I take advantage of time constraints. For example. If i've got an hour-long lecture to go to, i'll shove a potato in the oven, so it cooks whilst I'm learning. I return from my lecture, get a can of beans, and I have a jacket potato with beans. Cheap as chips! (or probably cheaper than chips actually.)

Takeaways are generally the preseve of when you really, really can't be bothered cooking, and for those times when you are drunk enough to believe that a crap takeaway makes good food.

pasta and tuna mayo with sweetcorn ftw  then the next day to finnish the stuff put it on a jacket potato. yummy!

those pasta thingies, ravioli (sp), is nice with cheese. home made pizza, beans on toast, sausages and mash (i cant make mash not lumpy so i buy tesco ready made stuff), pasta bake is good if you have nice flatmates to share with, roast chicken and potatoes with some veg is really easy and everyone thinks your a goddess for being able to cook a roast XD. erm add a load of take-aways and the marks and spencers kiddie meals and that was pretty much my student diet for last year.

You shouldn't have to worry about what other people might think about you cooking your own food, rather than bunging a plastic tray in the micro, or staying off the booze.

One of my ex housemates used to always give me digusted looks whenever she saw me cooking in the kitchen. This was mainly because she can't get a grip of the fact that someone my age might actually cook for myself if I don't have my mum around to do it. Also she just lived off cheese butties and crisps and said anything else was minging.

I try to eat proper meals and eat healthily at uni but that doesn't mean to say I don't treat myself to take aways every now again. Normally after a night out to be honest.
