Hey
I remember having the same problem last year! Apparently they are the same - it's just that some universities use a different code (doesn't make much sense to me either  ). I know some of my friends doing medicine applied for both A100 and A106 courses but both courses give you the same qualification. I think A106 might be the old code and some universities still use it (it also might be as some med courses are 6 years if they have a bsc option aswell etc.)
Hope that's vaguely helpful (i've just read what i've written and i can see that i may have waffled quite spectacularly! och well! i'll post it anyway!) Basically, just use the codes for the universities you want to go to and check with their admissions tutor to check if u like!

thanks, thats what i thought really that one would be an old course name, its weird how the newcastle medicine booklet mentiones both of them which made me ask!

A106 is the code for 2nd year entry onto a 6 year degree - i.e. is used by medical schools who run a 'foundation year plus medicine degree'. So it works out as being 5 years for you... (if that makes sense).

That said, I thought that schools were made to standardise for 2007 entry - that A100 be used for all 5 year courses, and A104 for 6 year, foundation year containing courses...

ahh thats interesting, does that mean that A106 courses might have even less places as some will have those doing premed, in addition to overseas reserves and deferred entry applicants?

No - they had 'protected number of places - the course was known as A104 for 6 years, or A106 for 5 years (doing years 2-6 of the 6 year course0.

It's all academic now though, as medical schools were asked to standardise their numbering so that:
All 5 year courses (or 5 year plus comp intercalation) - A100.
All GEP - A101.
All 6 year courses which incluse foundation year - A104.

A quick look on the UCAS course search for 2007 shows med schools have standardised now...
