Ridiculous Timetable Gaps

Ok, mabye this is just a fluke occurance; but today after receiving my timetable i was a little annoyed (to put it midly) at the prospect of having a 3 hour break between lessons on a Thursday morning to late afternoon. But after now being told that my General Studies and Tutorial groups have been moved around, leaving me with a massive 5 hour break in between lessons from first thing on a Monday morning (9:00-10:30) till 15:30, seems completely unneccessary. Do you think i would have grounds to complain and ask for a new timetable?

I wouldn't go into your school complaining exactly as it is unlikely to go don well but you could politely ask the teacher in charge of timetabling if they could move one of your subject blocks so that you don't have such big gaps. If you're taking unpopular subjects with only one group though people do tend to end up with awkward timetables as they can't be moved around.

That depends on your school.
At my college, pupils are held in the same regard as the dirt on the bottom of one's shoe. But things may be different at yours.
Also, we can go home after lessons.
However, if you're not allowed to do so, a 5 hour gap presents the perfect opportunity for one to study and revise and get those As at A Level.

Lets be honest a 5 hour gap presents a vast wealth of opportunity. Suicide worryingly springs to mind. However, last year during my AS Level course i ended up with a 3 hour gap during Friday morning. Now whilst this was useful to use as additional study time, the feeling of adding an additional 2 hours to this study time seems a little excessive.

After doing a little research and contacting the College directly, i have discovered that the choices i have selected for A2 study all have at least two different classes running, apart from Computing. Therefore the movement of Law, Business Studies and English Language and Literature should be viable to help clean up my time table.

Yep you might be able to tidy it up a bit, it is definitely worth your while so long as your college lets you leave when you don't have classes (ie if you had the whole afternoon free or late mornings instead of middle-of-the-day gaps).
I dont see the big problem really. You could go home, go back bed? do some work, go into town do some shopping, have something nice to eat and arrive all refreshed for you last lesson.

I have, ofcourse ended up with the oddest timetabling for my frees, all mine are 2nd lesson. So i have to get up early every day unlike everyone else who gets atleast one lie in. Go me.

 I had a friend with a 4 hour gap every Tuesday. He used it for driving lessons. It could be useful for homework or revision.

 Then again you may just sit eating like I did whenever I had a long gap at college so I'd definately speak to a teacher.

I dont see what they can do about it. this iwll be because of the way they pool their subjects... they cat just cange everything for sone person or everyone's timetables will have to change.

I suggest either going home if you live close enough, or saving your homework for then.

At college I had a 3 hour gap betweent lessons 3 days a week... and i did all my homework and revision in that time. Did me no harm at all.
Yeah i agree, i had a 5 hour break at college which at first i thought was such a pain but its great for revision and course work so i wouldn't worry about it.

No.

Don't go in. At my school we had one subject all morning (4 periods) and then another subject all afternoon (2 periods). So if you aren't taking a subject in a certain block, you will have at least one day a week where you have no lessons until lunchtime. So, come in at lunchtime. On Fridays I had no lessons all morning and then general studies and P.E. after lunch (it was 2 subjects because those aren't "real" ones as both were obligatory), so Fridays were pretty sweet.
Why not just it to your advantage to get some homework done and have a nice lunch break? Then you won't have so much work to worry about when you get home.

Like i said before, he cant really complain anyway because he's got those frees because of the way the subjects are arranged at his school. They cant change things round or EVERYONE would have to get new timetables.

Some schools don't allow pupils to go home in free periods, and I think the poster's school may just be one of those schools.

Actually i have contacted the schools senior team, and they have agreed that there is actually a better way to combine together my chosen subjects. I am certainly not against having long breaks, since during my AS-Level year i used them to great effect to cover all coursework, homework and revision sessions. But the quantity which i was experiencing was just a little excessive that it ended up i was spending more time sat around with lunch and study breaks than actually in lesson.

I dont know whether you know this, but if you start a setence with "actually"... it sounds a bit pompous and rude. Just thought id mention that.

As long as we're indulging in pedantry, I'd like to say that rediculous if spelled correctly would be RIDICULOUS.

Tut Tut

'I'd' always has an apostrophe in the middle like I have spelt it at the beginning of this sentence.

Before anyone questions my use of spelt and spelled; both are perfectly fine to use.
I know people at my college who just asked for a different timetable, and it got sorted for them np.

Last year for AS, i had a four hour gap between lessons on a friday morning. At first it seemed a bit daunting, but i put it to good use and just studied extra hard in it whilst listening to my Ipod. Towards the end of the year I used it for driving lessons, and for playing cricket/socialising etc. The only way i can see it being a major problem for anyone is if they dont want to study, and/or they have no friends!

Oh yeah as for this year, on 3 different days I have only 2 lessons , which start at like 14:00 , so for this year i'm just gunna drive in when they start, and have a mega lie in!
I wouldn't complain if I were you because ultimately they can't change it; that would mean changing everyone's. It's just very unfortunate. I know how you feel though, if not worse :p: I have to be in for 9:00 each morning, and on a Thursday I don't have english lit. until 3:30 but i can't leave :p: Still I'm a calm, good natured person lol - basically can't be bothered to get annoyed - so I'm just going to sit in the library, go on computers and meet with friends inbetween their lessons. It's extremely annoying, but come to terms with the idea that you can't change it and find ways in which you could fill the time  xxx

Well then i apologize that you misunderstood my use of the word "actually". You know pedantry seems to be a pretty common feature in the majority of threads and posts here at The Student Room. Surely, we all comprehend that this is an internet forum, and not a professional conference of Linguists?

I noticed that but felt it would be rather pedantic to point it out :p: grammar errors do annoy me a lot but on TSR I tend to just leave the major grammar and spelling mistakes as it's only a chat room  Typos are allowed :p: (Despite the 'e' and 'i' being considerably further apart in this case) xxx
