Clare is hardly full of raving communists.
Where is the other thread

a few threads below this one... but it might be worth having another seeing as the other was quickly overtaken by apathetics.

I got the impression this year that a majority of students were liberals... or voted lib dem in the recent local elections in cambridge. In terms of college reputations then the more private school students in a college the more its thought to be tory. Not that this is actually true at all. I know conservatives at Kings... and i'm one of those irritating old labour types and i'm at Jesus.
Called "political leanings of the colleges" - about half way down the page on the thread list at the moment...

Oi, I resent that...

Traditionally, Johns, Magdalene, possibly Peterhouse and Trinity are the right-wing colleges; Clare, King's, Tit Hall (to a lesser extent) the left-wing colleges.

TBH, there's a certain amount of truth in the stereotypes (certainly, I know a fair few right-wing hoorah Henry types in my own college) but mostly it's the vocal minority you tend to hear which gives the colleges their names...

although, of course, King's is full of raving Communist sympathisers who want to overthrow the Government and replace Cambridge with a comprehensive...
WAIT WAIT - DID I JUST SEE A MAGDALENE STEREOTYPE?!??!

At last, I was beginning to think it might be a college full of "blend-ins" or something, no-one ever seems to say anything about Magdalenites...

I base that on the following:

1) the fact that Madgalene May Ball is horrifically expensive and, last time I checked, still White Tie Preferred (no watering down like Trinity :frown:)

2) the fact that you were, I believe, the last college to accept women

3) the few Magdalene people I know are fairly conservative (small 'c')

On an open day, the tutor at Downing told me that Downing and , I think, King's were the only colleges to oppose tuition fees or top-up fees, whatever. The ones that are costing me three grand, anyway. :frown:

And held a mock funeral (for the death of their education  ) when they did so.

Clare is apparently left wing, but I can't say I've noticed it hugely. As Justin said, the vast majority of students voted Lib Dem (especially at Clare, where the MP was a Fellow) but apathy or disinterest is the predominant theme at most places.

Despite all this i urge you all to join CULC as i'll be on the stall at the freshers fair this year! * thinks of being pelted with rotten veg from the tories*

Or just bombed from above by their blimp thing -- I recommend packing small surface-to-air weaponry this year.

I'll be there too, and no doubt blazingly obvious -- tho' not in a political guise...

Yes, they had the CUCA girls in bikinis, because clearly they needed to have something to attract the punters and it certainly wasn't their policies!
Anyone know what Emmanuel is like politically? I resent the implication that private school people are right wing and tory......

resent away... its a fair generalisation to make. If your at a private school then its most likely that your parents are paying (so to exclude the clever few) and that they themselves are right wing making it likely that there children are to.

They also tend to come from welthier families which would make them more likely to be tories.
Okay, well, I resent the implication they all are. Neither my parents nor I are right wing oddly, just the only schools near me aren't exactly great learning environments.

I understand what your saying; I come from a traditional trade unionist family and we're looking at the local public school for my younger brother.

.. i do believe it is a fair generalisation though.

Thankfully, however, no one implied that. If I can recall correctly (which I can, seeing as I'm quoting verbatim  ) what was actually said was:

"the more private school students in a college the more its thought to be tory. Not that this is actually true at all"

This is true. It would also be true to say that people from private school backgrounds tend to be right-wing, but even this rather mild statement wasn't made (AFAICS).
