Sibly Hall ?

elo elo

I just rang up the accommodation office today to find out whether they'd recieved my application (clearing...) and I was told that I've been allocated a place at Sibly.

So obviously I'm pleased to have got into halls at all through clearing, but I looked on the map and realised its actually pretty far away from the main campus and all the other halls etc. so I'm a bit worried about that. Also, no washbasin in the rooms, but the rooms are apparently "larger than average" so can't complain there I guess.

So anyone else staying in Sibly? and can anyone tell me how long a walk it is to the main campus?

cheers
Jag

I'm stuck in Sibly too! i think its only a 10min walk max, my bro went to Reading for a year an he said it isn't that bad! I would rather have the larger room an a small walk me thinks

i would not worry about the location/distance from campus.. 10 mins in nothing and the facilities at Sibly are great even if it’s Ugly from the outside.. Life there will be what you make it:biggrin:

Bah, I just got given Sibly as temporary accommodation. In all honesty that severely pisses me off. It is 10 minutes away from the campus and I can't even move in any significant items due to uncertainty of permanent accommodation. It seems rather lame that on freshers week I won't be within a reasonable distance of the main campus to readily access all 'entertainment'. If I get a permanent place at Sibly I'll also be annoyed as it looks a substantial distance from there to Law. NOT HAPPY!

your doing law? me too! lol...ah well at least maybe we can walk it up there together lol. why the hell is law so far up in the corner on its own anyway? Oh well, the facilities look pretty good like you said.

and how do you know that its just temporary?

I wouldn't worry about a 10 minute walk. I have a 25 min walk up a hill to campus a few times a day, it's perfectly reasonable and means a bit of fresh air before lectures.

Well Reading was my insurance so I knew I wasn't going to get first choice accommodation but I have been given temporary accommodation at Sibly for the week. They say it is probably because a 3rd year student is coming back into it. They say they'll hopefully be able to offer me a permanent place there, but obviously they can't be sure. It is a very frustrating situation =/

But yea, having done a quick comparrison again... Sibly seems fairly good regardless of the walk. I would have preferred Wessex considering it is very near Law =D but hey, I'll live. Atleast I have someone to walk with now! XD

Okay... now I'm furious... Jag... you got your law place through clearing and have a permanent place in halls. Reading was my insurance and I'm stuck not knowing where I'm going. I hope that isn't the case across the board, it is very unfair. I have a good mind to ring them up and ask what the hell that is all about.

well by "permanent", I havent actually recieved the formal thign in writing, but when i rang them up they said i had a place in Sibly, and also on the online enrolment it says that also, so it sounds pretty definite.

and yeah, sorry dude:redface: , that does seem unfair, maybe its because you confirmed your place later than me. I dunno.

the whole system is pretty messed up if you ask me...I got a letter a few days after results day from UCAS saying that they had confirmed my place at Coventry university to do law and that i couldnt back out now otherwise id be kicked off the ucas system for this year. all very well, except I hadnt actually accepted their offer, or sent them my clearing passport, or anything of the sort. I didn't even want to go there, I wanted Reading. I think they (coventry) were just a bit desperate to fill their places:mad: . So yeah that was a bit stressful but when I rang up coventry, reading, and UCAS it got all sorted out. Hopefully everything will work out for you too dude.

Call them....I was waiting for confirmation by post but then my mate (also attending Reading) said he called the accommoddation office cos didn't wanna wait etc. and they told him straight off. I did the same todaya nd found out where I'm going (the one and only Sibly!) so do it! Now!! lol....

lol...I'm hearing loads of bad stuff about Sibly....

someone referred to it as "Nine floors of depression"

someone else said its "one to avoid"

and apparently someone actually died in the lift (true story...)

lol, oh well, thats what I get for coming in through clearing...

My best friend just finished her first year at Reading and she stayed in Sibly and i used to go stay with her for weekends. Even though it's quite a walk from everything, it's a nice place to live. It's really really social and the building is nice on the inside. you guys will have an awesome time there!

yes someone did die in a lift but it was a freak accident….he did not however jump from the roof as has been previously been quoted... but take the stairs and you will be fine...

People die in hospitals every day... but you wouldn't not go to a hospital because of it...

Very odd thing to bring up as a 'bad' thing.

Yeah well, it's some people's mentality.

The only reasons I wouldn't want to go to sibly is the distance and lack of washbasins. But you get bigger rooms as a result, so...

If you don't like it, im sure there'll be places within the first few weeks in halls from dropouts and those who didnt make it. Just keep talkign to the people in the accomodation office.
Hey! I'm in Sibly Hall also studying law! I too was concerned about the distance but 10-15 minutes doesn't sound bad at all! What time is everyone going to be arriving? i can't make up my mind whether to go earlier or later.
Weeeeee, another Law person

Sibly it is - so is it true "international hall" does that mean I'll be living next door to someone from France?? :redface:S I don't speak French. Feck.
I am in Sibly too. Ive heard bad stuff about it but it cant be that bad. The distance is nothing to worry about though. 15 minutes walk is hardly any distance at all. Thats how long I had to walk to sixth form.
