I passed GCSE Computing with a C (last year). This year I done AS ICT Applied and just passed with a D. But I failed my other A levels this year so had to move schools. I've applied for a college and talked to them on enrolment day. I wanted to retake AS ICT and do Business, Economics next to it (both of which I did not do at AS previously).
However the person I spoke to said I was not allowed into Business simply because I had a D grade for it at GCSE. She said I am allowed to get into BTEC Business. So I was thinking about doing that (BTEC) with AS ICT and Economics, but then I discovered that you can't take a BTEC with a AS next to it. That said, I would have to do BTEC Business for two years with no other subject.
I am looking forward for an IT subject at uni and a IT-related career. Therefore I feel like ICT is more suitable for me than Business, if I should commit to one subject like in BTEC.
The person I spoke to said that BTEC ICT is very good (I have been accepted for the highest L3 BTEC ICT diploma). She said it leads to good universities. Looking at the units of BTEC ICT, I liked them, and there are no exams, so that's an advantage. She also offered me AS Computing but I rejected it after looking at the units it had (it had programming and other stuff that I found difficult in GCSE).
My mate said if I still wish to have a Business type of degree, I can finish two years of BTEC ICT and then do a short course of Economics before going to uni.
So my question is, is it worth it to take BTEC ICT? I am just concerned if unis will consider BTEC ICT as a low qualification as opposed to AS ICT. Particularly now that I am switching from AS to BTEC, it might feel like a downgrade. But what do you think? Shall I take BTEC ICT? I don't want to end up at uni doing a easy course that anyone can do.
