Going bald sending me into depression

Im an 18 year old male, and for about a year now my hairline has been receding into what is now an M shape at the front. Im finding that I cant stop thinking about it, and its affecting my social life too; I'll be more quiet with friends, or when I'm trying to approach women I keep thinking "they can see I'm thinning out on the sides" and it just makes me feel awful. I guess I'm just looking for advice really...how other guys have handled it, and what girls think of the situation. Should I perhaps just shave it all off? At the moment I can sort of flick it to the sides a little bit to help hide it, but it can still be apparant.

Any help would be great.

Shave it off! Bald men are soooo sexy.
know a friend who was bald by twenty, never really spoken to him bout how he felt at the time though.

he's happy enough now, shave your bonce and forget bout it.
life's to short, if gail porter/kylie minogue could cope, then so can you.

I know many people who would agree. Dont let it put you off when you go out, its not important to most girls.

well, during puberty the hairline does recede somewhat, to a set point. Are you sure its not that, perhaps a bit late? If you really are losing your hair, why not counter it's gayness by becoming physically elite in other ways. Start training etc

I really agree with what the other girls have said about bald guys.
Cheer up!

Yeah. He was the first person I thought of too.

You sound like my boyfriend. I'm trying to find a picture to show you but can't at the moment.

Anyway, his hair is his little obbsession... he has long, naturally bleached hair, gorgeous. The only problem is that it is thinning out on the top and the front. I honestly couldn't care less, I would love him if he was totally baldd or even if he had a comb over...but he insists on spending money on it.

There are hormone replacement pills you can get and a lotion which does the same thing, they are expensive though and you can also get hair plugs which I think he is saving up for.

At the end of the day though, if a girl is really fickle enough to only like you on appearance do you want her? Love yo-self BOY!

Although when women say bald=sexy they are normaly thinking about famous guys, normally good looking/rather masculine, and able to pull off the bald look. I don't think the average guy can do it, you have to have a certain face.

Reply 9

Perhaps you could shave it off and invest in a wig.

To be honest, I think we need to see a picture. As people have said, some people look great bald (Agassi, Jason Statham, Becks etc.) and some people would look better rocking a wig.

We need to see your face to know.

there's a difference between bald and receding hairline tho, it can be a good thing...it could accentuate your features or perhaps not... you could just shave it !...a picture would be nice

You must remember... Julius Caesar was bald! That is the most impressive historical figure I could think of, so be proud, one day you too could be a great man of the people! Or something like that! Yea, it sucks to have the change at first, but I agree when you feel it has got to drastic, shave your head to a reasonable length, it'll grow on you and others will accept it quite readily I'm sure.

Any decent person is not going to care about your hairline, however! I have always had a thing for guys with shaved heads, but not for famous people, I have no idea why.. so if you decide to go for that, you have my vote:cool:

I for one, if I was going bald, would not shave my hair off because I reckon I'd look crap but if it started looking really bad then why not.

Some person who knew what they were talking about, mentioned that hair recedes after puberty anyway. There are some guys who lose hair at the corner of their forehead when they're 20 and who then keep that hair until way in their late 30s. I think a dermatologist described it to me as a secondary sexual characteristic just like facial hair. It's what differentiates men from women. Only women are supposed to have an almost round hairline.

If you really think that you need to do something about it in the meantime because you're very attached to your hair and hairstyle (some people are), only two proper solutions for you:
- Minoxidil lotion, buy it at any Boots. Don't be ashamed, they see people buy it everyday and even then, you're out in a few secs. It's proven to stop hairloss and is recommended by dermatologists. No need for a prescription

- Propecia (look it up on google). Prescription medicine that acts on the hormones responsible for hairloss in most men. You'll have to talk to your GP about it. At first, he's unlikely to want to give it to you and will probably recommend minoxidil but if you're commanding and say that you're sure you want the treatment, I doubt he'd refuse if he agrees that you are losing hair.

You should mention the Propecia affects hormones much like the female pill. It causes your penis' size to fluctuate and you can become quite aggressive on it... I can't remember reading any other side affects/effects?

It can cause impotence in very rare cases (but then a lot of medicine has that unfortunate side effect!). I'm not sure about the penis size, I think that's really just scaremongering and people overworrying. However, it can cause a man to develop female body characteristics such as breasts. There's medicine to counter that.

In any case, any such symptom is reversible. As soon as you stop, the symptoms go away quickly, which is reassuring.

That's all I can remember. I'm sure there's plenty of sites on the web.

To the op, mine's been slowly going to that big hairdressers in the sky since i was bout 16, and although yeah for ages i was super paranoid about it, you just gonna recognize that theres nowt you can do and it's really not an issue. You can see what mine's like on my profile pic, and although i sometimes go '****, didn't realise it was that far back' it makes no difference to me now and has never been a problem when it comes to getting girls. That said, i have had a shaved head/number 1 since i was 14 so that kinda minimises the effect. Basically, lifes too short to get worked up over such an inconsequential thing, just get out there and have fun, that has a much bigger effect on people than your hair's emigration.
