Headaches

Does anyone here suffer from regular headaches or migraines?
I regularly get moderately bad headaches (not migraines though thankfully, as there's no flashing lights etc or nausea) but even so, they are very annoying and make me feel irritable and apathetic, and if I'm at college or doing homework or something, I can't concentrate.

I try taking pills, I try NOT taking pills. Sometimes Panadol or paracetamol will help, but it's not a certainty.

I eat and drink enough so it can't be that that's causing it. I don't think it's problems with my eyesight either- I already have glasses and wear them for certain things.

Are regular headaches hereditary? My mum gets them a lot too. I don't think it's related to the time of the month either because I don't go a single week without getting them.

How often does everyone else get headaches? Anyone got any tips on how to get rid of them?

Thanks

Do you drink a lot of coffee? Sometimes getting the wrong amount of caffeine gives me a headache, like now...I'm off to put the kettle on.

Hehe be careful

Errm no I don't drink coffee at all. I do drink a LOT of tea though, and a few Diet Cokes in a week. Could that have the same effect, as I know there is some caffeine in those things?

It could, but it's unlikely you're intaking enough caffeine to give you a headache if your sleep cycle is perfectly normal.

Thanks for your input  hmm it's kinda puzzling then, as I always get 8+ hours sleep a night.

Anyone else got the same problem?

Do your eyes need testing at all?

I know that when I started Uni I was getting a lot of headaches and it turned out that my eyes were strained from all of the reading and especially trying to read things in the lectures and when I got glasses the headaches went away

Also I find that if I don't drink enough water I get headaches from the dehydration

I'm glad your headaches went away

Well I don't think its that for me cos my eyes were tested quite recently and I've had glasses for about 6 years now, not all the time, but for long distances. By now I've kinda got used to when I do and don't need to wear them so I don't think that's the problem, although perhaps it would be worth going back to the optician soon to ask them about it and make sure
Thanks

dehydration, stress and or lack of sleep gives me migraines. i dont find paracetamol any good but neurofen do a good migraine painkiller. it doesnt stop the room spinning but it does stop the worst of the pain.

I've suffered from regular headaches for years, mostly just what I'd consider an moderate level headache, but sometimes (several times a year, at least) finding that these develop into something much worse where I can't do anything but curl up in a dark room and try not to move. I didn't consider them migraines, because they weren't usually accompanied by auras or anything like that, but a few years ago, just before my GCSEs, I went to he doctor who diagnosed a type of migraine and prescribed preventative medication called Pizotifen. Apparently 'common migraine' manifests without the early visual warning signs such as auras and flashing lights.

There's also a condition commonly known as chronic daily headache, which is defined as a condition in which one suffers from headaches at least 15 days of the month, for several months of the year (can't remember how many, exactly). It occurs often in adolescents, whether or not they have a history of migraine. I tended to have chronic daily headache interspersed with migraines, which apparently is quite common. Often the pain is not focused on one part of the head, but it is present throughout the day but fluctuates in intensity, usually at a mild to moderate level an sometimes severe. Usually there are no associated symptoms (sensitivity to light/nausea/vomiting).

Does any of this sound familiar to you? I know how horrible it is to have constant headaches. All I can suggest is to see your doctor, and see what they say. There are quite a number of treatments for migraine and headaches, so hopefully they'll be able to help you.

Hope you get it sorted out!

Maybe you need to drink some more fluids.

BlytheK- your headaches sound horrible :frown: I'm glad you were prescribed the preventative medication- does it help a lot?

As for the chronic daily headache, I'm not sure exactly how many days in a month it happens to me- I think maybe the best idea for me is to keep a diary over a length of time and see exactly when and what time I get them and how long they last, and then maybe show it to the doctor?

Yes what you said does sound familiar- hardly ever any associated symptoms like vomiting, and fluctuating in intensity. One minute I think it's getting better, then a bit later on it will get worse again.

Thanks loads for your help and advice

And thanks to Carl as well- although I think I drink enough, I'll try and drink even more water and see if that has any effect!

I get hornomal headaches alot; in fact, I just get headaches alot. I usually have a bath, eat some food (as it's usually that that is causing it), get some fresh air, or just sleep.

Yeah fresh air is definitely good! especially when it's windy and you can dance around, lol. Or maybe that's just me... :P

Mooncheese: Try asking your GP to prescribe you something called Naramig. It goes for the blood vessels in your head which cause headaches/migraines in the first instance, so it's probably one of the fastest pain relief methods you could get.

Oh wow ok, thanks hanby, I'll write that down and ask about it!

Defiantly! Especially when it's just rained and is slightly breezy. Really clear the mind.

Yes, the medication did help, although I've come off that particular stuff now. And keeping a diary sounds like a really good idea - it may help you to work out if there's a pattern to them, or whether they're random. Let me know how you get on!

I have this, well sort of.
I have headaches at least 1 a day in varying degrees.

I also go through periods (3 to 4 weeks at a time) or having migraines constantly, maybe not the pain one day just flashing lights, next day nausea, next day constant sleep, next all at once with pain etc.

Its not nice.

Fortunately my GP suffers from them aswell so he can relate well and is putting me through all the different medicines he tried till he got one that helped.

The one i take at the moment is Pizotzofen or something like that, its prescribed but he gave me 300 odd tablets and told me to regulate the dosage between 1 and 4 as i feel is needed. Im so used to headaches i never touch medicine for them but for migraines i dose up. But i must warn it knocks me out cold, i slept a straight 30 odd hours after taking the maximum 4 twice a day. which stopped me noticing a headache i spose heh.

The causes of these can be anything from allergies, eye problems, nervous system, stress etc. To other seemingly less related problems such as; kidneys, breathing, heart and genital problems.

I know those as ive had my lungs and kidneys checked for other problems but they carried extra tests to see if theres anything to cause my migraines. Hope this helps.

If you wanna try the medicine ask the doc for Pizotzofen

When I was about 12 I had recurring migraines, which were always accompanied by vomiting and so I missed 17 weeks of school. I had a brain scan but they couldn't find anything wrong and I eventualyl grew out of them. I have always had frequent headaches and I rely on paracetamol and 4head rub (dunno what it does, but makes head go all tingly and cold- perhaps that discomfort distracts from the pain but it works anyway!!-ish... ) I get them when I'm tried, when I'm not, when I'm hungrhy/thirsty, when I'm not...just have to live with them- I also ahve infrequent *FINGERS CROSSED* migraines which take me out for a day of more and my eyesight always goes as a warning (literally cannot see except on VERY edges of vision, and then my head hurts a LOT and then I'm sick (normally twice) and then my head hurts badly for most of the day but I'm always much better after being sick. So I know how you feel...Try migraleve maybe- I've not had a chance yet- you take the pink ones when the vision goes and then yellow if it continues...it worked for my friends mum...Fun. Fun. Fun. :frown:
