Racism in Manchester

A lot of friends have each individually told me how Manchester is particularly racist in respect to the northern cities. Now I come from London, a virtual racial haven, and am Indian and recognise that obviously all cities have their particularly xenophobic regions, however I was wondering whether perhaps Manchester students have had any particularly bad experiences or can shed light on the racism in the city, as it is something that particularly concerns me and the dangers that can result.

Thanks in advance.

Err I am not sure where they got that from at all. Manchester is a multi culterial city, many people of all sorts of races happily live on the same streets without any trouble at all.

You're Indian so what? Nobody will give a toss, its only an issue if you make it into one.

The only place thats really had any trouble is Oldham and thats not in Manchester as such.

I reckon it's probably a case of where you go. Places like Stockport and Oldham probably arent the best ideas. The majority of London is fine but there are still trouble spots. The East End, Dagenham area is renowned for its white working class background and its BNP local elected government. There are often violent attacks between the Greeks and Turks in Enfield. Brent and Wembley houses all the immigrants so there it's all on all.

Choose your friends, stick with them and you'll be fine.

There are idiots around, but you'll find them in any city. I wouldn't say the problem is any worse than other places.

When i went there the first time there were friendly students and people the second time it was full of happy gays since some gay pride thing was happening and at both times people were very friendly.

London is a multicultural racial haven? Whereabouts do you live mate?

Just know that all of us students are educated individuals so we accept everyone into our culture unlike the dumb uneducated racists.

life in uni wont be bad .... it's really only the uneducated ppl who are racist

If your living in student areas, you won't have any problems! I was a student in manchester for 3 years... the only problems i witnessed first hand was racism towards white/non muslim individuals during EID in rusholme.

As far as diversity is concerned i recognise differences but for gods sake we are all human beings and thus i really cant understand racism. As far as i'm concerned a persons skin makes no more difference than which football team they support. Diversity is the spice of life and should be welcomed!

no one will care unless you do the whole is it cuz i is black thing
To be honest I have found Manchester to be one of the most accepting places in England for different races and cultures, definately not a racist place in my opinion. I think there's just a lot of stigmas like Moss Side is said to be rough...and many say that because it is mainly populated by Afro-Caribbean's. Saying that I walked through Moss-Side a few months ago very wary by what people said, and I was fine! I've been through worse areas in Manchester trust me!

In terms of Racism, I would rather be in Manchester than London...
My friend spent a night in a police station ... she is 4feet tall so very small and white...she was on a bus going through a mainly black populated area of london...three 6ft tall black guys got on the bus, grabbed her book out of her hand, ripped it apart and threw her off the bus, then proceeded to beat her up BECAUSE she was white and we know that was the reasoning becase of the comments said to her throughout.

Sorry to hear about that, London is really bad though tbh people of any race when they are bored seem to start fights with anyone.. i read about it all the time. Glad i live in Manchester and not London. And i'm not surprised that they didn't rape her..., probably just some stupid youths who were bored so thought they would pick on a helpless girl, it's a shame that there are people like this but i hope that doesn't make you group those youths as a representation of black people since me and my friends in manchester wouldn't ever dream of doing such a thing, but that maybe because we were all raised well and educated... who knows.

APEEHSH. I've lived in Manchester practically my entire life and have never experienced racism. (am mixed race). Even in places like Oldham. (though it's not an especially pleasant area to go to in my opinion).

Moss Side is a bit dodgy but as long as you don't go there at night/get involved in any sort of gang warfare there should be no problems.

To the thread starter your friend are talking a load of crap and are probably just trying to make you nervous. There is loads of diversity and also areas where particular cultures tend to group together so it's your choice where you go and who you mix with.

The only thing Mancs might get worked up about are hoity toity Southerners who make a huge deal about being from a certain area of poshness.

There's good and bad in every race and racism exists no matter where you go. Narrow minded pricks if you ask me. Just keep your head down and forget about them. It's the same everywhere, you'll get good and bad wherever you stay or go.

If you DO come across a racist/ or racists, always remember.

Being the only Muslim and asian person in the flat its getting worse by the day. All of my flatmates are white atheist and mainly middle classed. They will make insulting remarks about other cultures when they've been on a night out or had a drink. Not all are intentionally racist but some are. They all know better as they're all highly educated individuals. But in truth they don't give a dam, as they know they'll get away with it as majority opinion rules. What's worse is those who aren't will not speak up against such racists and bigots. I believe its because they're cowards. I hate it when they come to me individually to try to apologise.

The accommodation office should but people of same faith with atleast one other person of the same faith. Specially if your Muslim. Not being able to eat the same food as rest of the household is bad, you can cut the tension with knife at dinner times. Eating after everyone else is eaten is sad! I was told by the accommodation office that they don't but people of the same course together because they want people to mix with other people. That's aload of bull s**t, most of my flatmates are on the same course - history & politics.

Ethnic minorities should be placed with atleast one other ethnic minority, so that no one is singled out for racial abuse by racists and bigots!!!
Loved the quote hero said =)

i don't agree, you should mix instead of segregating yourself- jack staw is right. integrating is the only way forward- otherwise things will get much worse than they are at the moment
