Drama School Audition Advice!

I just wanted to say that, as a student who gained offers at a few drama schools for September 2006 entry, don't be scared to be different at auditions and don't try to anticip8 what a certain drama school does/does not want because there really is no way of telling. And if like me, any present drama teachers warn you that you can't do it because you're not (insert description) enough DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM!!!! Ok guys, do tell me of any interesting experiences you have because generally a lot of them pop up in these situations (I banged into a mirror at a musical theatre audition whilst dancing  ) :p:

I had an audition for a course in a part of a theatre that was also used as an art gallery, though that was all totally closed off for auditions of course. Some arsey old wifeys decided to ignore all the ropes and signs and such and wander through anyway, right in the middle of the most dramatic bit of my monologue. Still got in though

Where are you off to btw?
Hello Acaila! Well actually, despite all the auditioning etc etc, i eventually decided to go to Manchester University to study Drama because personally, my urge to be a comedian is stronger than that to be a good all round trained actress so the course I've chosen is more about writing than being taught skills.
I'm glad you got where you wanted despite the rude interruptions! What rude ladies lol!
Im thinking about applying for drama school next year (after my A-levels) and been doing loads of research  but i've been a bit put off by alot of the auditions involving a short unaccompanied song? I'm just about to start getting some singing lessons to prepare, and i have enough of a voice to be given singing parts in my A-level drama, so i was just wondering what sorts of songs you guys had sung? And what monologues you had used for your auditions? And what they asked you to do? and what the general atmosphere is like.... Anything you can say would be helpful tbh, i have alot of questions..
I'm kinda like that,....looking at theatre schools for starting in 2010, but the singing side puts me off.... i can hold a very basic tune, but have nothing of a voice to get myself anywhere...
I would love to do musical theatre, but obviously i know that singing is a definite requirement so im now looking at more dance and drama courses..
Does anyone know of anywhere that may offer such courses, or where singing is involved in the course, but is not 'if you cant sing your not in no matter how good your other skills are' at an audition??
weird question i no...

Similar to your monologue, the unaccompanied song should be within your age range and appropriate to your voice type (soprano, contralto, etc.). I'm assuming you're applying for straight acting, not musical theatre, in which case they won't place the emphasis on this part of your audition. Holding a 'basic tune' will usually suffice.

I would recommend reading this book:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Want-Tread-Boards-Everything-you-need-know/dp/1906217025

It focuses on applying to drama school, particularly on choosing and performing audition songs.

a brilliant song to sing a capella and that is easy to shorten, is "How Many Tears" from the musical Martin Guerre. i've sang it many a time for auditions and it has always proved successdul :yep:
