a friend of mine did not know any chinese at all at the beginning of year 1 of IB and she ended up with a 7 in chinese ab initio. you just have to work really hard.
im chinese, biligual, english and cantonese chinese. my spoken mandarin and written work were both worse than my english. i took the IB mandarin SL B and that was okay. i had this friend who took Chinese ab at the beginning of term and he gave up straight away after two lessons saying 'it is impossible" he later took russian ab and i think he got a 7. personally, i think chinese is not that hard to learn. you just have to memorise all the characters and then the rest will be fine. we dont have grammer or tenses (well we do a bit) but once you get to know all the characters, trust me, you will be fine. if you need further help, feel free to pm me.

Hello everyone,

Thank you for your supportive comments. We will see how my Chinese goes!
is the op shamelessly advertising an enemy forum?
lol. enemy forum? that serious??

I only know one single person who did Mandarin Ab. I wouldnt know how hard it is. But I guess the idea of learning a totally different form of writing freak people out sometimes. I've never tried to learn Chinese but I dont think for me, anyway, it would be that hard, considering I'm vietnamese and vietnamese has a VERY strong Chinese base. and the fact that all the shows on Vietnamese TV seem to be Chinese historical dramas means that I probably know more chinese words (spoken) for someone who had never learnt Chinese.
