Computer Science or Software Engineering?

I have just started my A2 year and I will be soon applying to my university courses.
In the future I hope to become a games programmer but I recommended to steer clear of dedicated games degrees because as technology is left behind, so are you due to lack of background theory knowledge making it harder to learn new languages.
So now I come to the issue of Computer Science or Software Engineering?

Although I do intend to become a games programmer I do have a keen interest in many other aspects of Computer Science but then I also have a fair amount of interest in other parts of Software Engineering.

At this moment in time I am leaning towards Software Engineering but my main concern is that this might be a less respected degree than Computer Science. Will they both give me the same opportunities to become a games programmer or is one better than the other for this path I hope to take?

I was in a similar position this time last year when I applied to uni I was considering computer science, software engineering and forensic computing, I was told that computer science was the best degree to do as it is general and overall the most well regarded degree in the industry

Software eng is more focused on programming where compsci is more of a general overall degree.
My friend just switched from software eng to compsci as he was telling me its more respected and opens more doors
I would choose computer science, people with computer science can do everything people with software engineering can, but not vice versa.

Software engineering is to specialised imo. You're better off with computer science you'll have far more options available when you graduate.
Depends on the uni also. At mine you can do CompSci and do the exact same modules as SE anyway. As with users above, CompSci.

Thank you for your answers so far, it seems like the general consensus is that Computer Science is better so I will look further into that as my course option.

The Unis I plan to apply to are:
University of Birmingham
University of Sheffield
University of Glasgow or University of Southampton
University of Leicester
University of Derby

Would you all say these Universities are good for Computer Science and are a good mix to put on the application?

Birmingham and Southampton definitely, what subjects do you take and what are you're predictions?
Surely, if you want to become a programmer SEng should be better than CompSci just like to become a biologist you should do biology rather than chemistry even though life is to chemistry what programming to computer science imo. You open less doors but the ones that remain open are easier to reach imo.

I'm doing Maths, Business Studies and Geography.
I'm expecting at least AAB with the B in Geography but I think if I try hard enough I'm capable of AAA
