Hi

Is the UCAS personal statement directly linked to the course you wanted to apply or just a brief description/summary of yourself?

It's very directly linked. Your basic task in the personal statement is showing you will do well in the course. To do so, you must show evidence of enthusiasm, achievement, potential, determination etc etc. It is useful to include things like "playing rugby for England has taught me how to manage my time" because that is a useful skill for university; however the majority of the information should be directly relevant to the course to show you have thought about it carefully and are committed to it.

Both.

start with why the course, why the uni, what makes you suited to the course, and a brief synopsis of what you like and your hobbies etc.

I agree with both. It all counts, personal experience, work experience, what you do in your spare time, etc.

a good tip is if there is a particular university u like - have a look at what it specialises in, then u can slightly alter you personal statement so it fits their criteria:

they want team members - tlak about sports and jobs
they want initiative - tlak abotu wqork experience and gap years
they want enthusiaim - tlak about what got u started originially, what aspects of the course u like (if they teach english and specialise in romanticism - say thats a favourite thing of urs to do)...of course u do have to be careful, if ur applying cambridge or oxford they completely hound ur statement and bring out the littlest things - so do ur research b4 writing anything down that may trip u up
