Why am I tired?

My diet consists mainly of complex carbohydrates such as low salt/GI baked beans and spaghetti, wholemeal pasta, wholemeal rice, wholemeal bread, sweet potatoes, plenty of vegetables such as green beans, peppers, onions, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, lettuce, cucumber etc. and clean sources of protein such as fat free cottage cheese, fat free cheese, eggs, protein shakes and veggie mince. The only time I eat high GI carbs is immediately after a resistance workout when I eat potatoes. I also make sure I get enough healthy fats from walnuts, peanuts, olive oil, etc. I drink plenty of water and don't really have a lot of caffeine or anything like that.

My exercise includes weights every 2 or 3 days, as well as some sort of cardio a couple of times a week or more, whether it be a run or playing a sport.

I get 8-10 hours sleep a night, and my job has just gone part time, but before that it was me sitting on my ass in a deckchair all day reading magazines and doing nothing.

Why the hell am I so tired, then?

Maybe you're trying to be too healthy? I don't know too much about it but I do know that, whereas limiting salt and fat is good, avoiding it altogether is bad. You're meant to have around 90g of fat a day (assuming you're doing enough exercise, which you are), maximum, but that certainly doesn't mean that having very little or no fat is good for you. Also, no fruit? Fruit gives you a lot of energy.

I'd watch the sleeping pattern too - 10 hours can be quite a lot, and variation of about two hours can be quite a lot, although, to be truthful, my sleeping pattern is bloody awful. :p:

Ah yes, my mistake. You don't need 90g of fat a day, you need about 50g, which I get.

As for fruit, I forgot to mention, I eat plenty of fruit. Apples, pears, nectarines. Today I ate 12 pieces of fruit. And yes, fruit does give you energy, in the form of carbohydrates, of which I get plenty already even without my fruit consumption.

I also don't think I'm too healthy. I mean, I drink about once a week, and I do tend to pick up the occasional Mars bar or something here and there, but for the most part my diet is top notch.

Maybe you don't get enough fresh air.

My job is sitting outside in a deckchair, so I'm outside for at least 10 hours a day, including travel.

Although admittedly now I'm only working weekends I'll be indoors more, but I've been feeling tired for a while.

You need some good meat and some fish to balance you diet.

Reply 6

Oh yeah, meat and fish, didn't even notice that.

On the other hand, maybe it's just that sitting outside is now so normal for you that being inside (cramped, artificial light etc.) makes you feel automatically tired?

Reply 7

I'm a vegetarian, so that won't be happening ever. I take vitamin and iron supplements and get plenty of protein from dairy sources and the EFAs I miss from the fish in supplemental form and from other fat sources, but I won't be eating meat ever.

Maybe the quality of your sleep isn't particularly high?

How long have you been weight training for without a break? if it's a few months it's possible you're over training and your body just can't handle the stress you're putting on it with the lifting and additional work; not necessarily physically but mentally with the lifting & work having a detrimental effect on the CNS. If you are genuinely tired without reason and have been lifting for a while, drop the weight training for a week or so, most of the exercises and give your body a chance to recover. If there’s no change go to the doctor’s and get a blood test.

The other thing to say is, it may be stating the obvious but once you’re working your body can’t always handle what it could before. Your body will be more tired if you keep the same work load as before & maybe you just require time to adjust.

The other thing is, maybe you’re just bored. Boredom can be a killer, lead to lack of motivation and depression which would make you more tired, lethargic.

I had a couple of weeks off of weights a couple of weeks back. Maybe 3 weeks or so ago?

Im tired all the time, even when I wake up in the morning, but I have an underactive thyroid.

Could have a sleep disorder of some sort...

my doctor once said the reason i was tired all the time was perhaps because i snored.. i don't, and that wasn't my issue so i'm still left wondering. it could be why you're tired, you can't switch off 100% in your sleep because your snoring keeps you semi awake.

It could be lots of things. Could be diabetes, anaemia etc or simply that your sleeping pattern isnt good. Maybe you should get a checkup by your GP.

I often feel lethargic. I'm worried about my amalgam fillings. One of them has certainly corroded over the last six months, and with mercury being quite toxic, i really dont feel safe with these kind of fillings in my mouth. When I think about it, I started feeling lethargic ever since I had these fillings put in... maybe its a coincidence, but i'm eager to get them removed now.
