cant stand the sound of people eating

Is anyone else like this?

I'm not normally a rude person but I want to put my fingers in my ears - and often do when other people around me are eating

I hate being this intolerant but I really feel like i have no control and lose my temper really easily when other people are eating, or also sniffing or even breathing leavily..

This is not a joke, and generally I try and avoid social situations involving food, but this means i miss out on a lot

Not sure what i hope to gain by posting this, but I would like any advice on being more tolerant?

thanks

 I'm EXACTLY the same! I mean my parents I think are the worst I've ever heard when it comes to eating. I hate family dinners when I'm sitting opposite because it's just horrific the sound they make, i just have to say im going to the toilet because I literally get so angry at the sound, and it seems the angrier I get the louder it gets :p: I don't have a go it them there's not a lot I can do about it but aaaargh lol nothing makes me more angry, just the sound of food being churned in someone's mouth and then breathing in while you're eating and the slurping and - well yes you can see how angry it makes me lol. I think me dad is the worst, he had a broken nose so he can't really breathe through his nose he practically inhales his food and sometimes I do sit there with my fingers in my ears, breathing heavily to drown out the sound lol. I thought it was just me being stupid so I'm glad to hear someone else is the same :p: Ive been putting up with it for 16 years, and I don't think there's a way of getting over it unless you just make yourself sit and listen to it until eventually you don't mind it  personally I can't do that, but i have learned to sit and try and just ignore it, despite how really disgusting it is  Hope me sharing your feeling has helped in any way lol xxx

I don't mind it if I'm eating also but if someone else is eating and I'm not, then that drives me up the wall. It's worse than fingernails on a blackboard and I have to leave the room.

I noticed it too that i can be a little conscious about this topic too. I was at workexperience with a friend at this school and we use to eat together in a empty classroom. First day, all i could hear was this munching noise from his mouth when he was eating his sandwiches. I didnt say nothing becasue he was an top friend but a few days later, i couldnt bare it and just told him straight.

He was ok about it though and decieded we eat outside from then on. Whats worst though is when some guy was eating rice and curry mixed with his hands and putting his whole hand in his mouth and stuff. I guess thats ok in his house but when your out with other people around you, that was very off putting.

Can I join the club too?

I only have this problem with both my parents, as they seem to be the only people I know who eat with their mouths open. The sounds they make are disgusting, it really gets to me. Also, as an added bonus, everytime my mum eats something that may be hard to chew, she makes this godawful squeaky chewy sound. (I'm just thinking: "WHHHHHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?!?!?!")

I sit next to my mum at the dinner table every evening, I'm surprised I haven't throttled her yet.

wow i really am not alone!

Its horrible that i get so angry and snappy, I try not to tell people about it as unless they are eating really disgustingly - and quite a lot of people do! there is not much they can do about it and then they will feel self conscious and weird when eating around me.

worst place is trains, probably cos you can't escape, there is always someone eating in my carriage, and i try and resist glowering at them!

thanks for everyones replies, I am actually thinking of getting some earplugs - so you think this is ott?

Reply 12

yeah ive been told off a few times by some of you compulsives for this...didnt think people hated it so much

OTT indeed. Worrying about people eating is the least of my worries. Hell, you're not perfect.

I hate the sound of my mum eating. She's horribly loud and disgusting about it. I do tend to notice the noise of other people eating, but it doesn't tend to bother me, unless they're really noisy. It does put me off if people talk with their mouths full though, I occasionally get grumpy and snappy with people who do that.

It's not a case of being perfect, it's simply a case of personal annoyance. I find it horrible as well, I hate hate hate it when people make smacking noises with their lips when they eat, it puts me completely off what i'm eating and makes me really annoyed, huh, and i thought i was the only one!

My brother is the noisest eater I've ever heard, he makes this really loud awful noise like 7 times with each bite, it's like sucking your teeth except worse, like hitting your tongue off the roof of your mouth in the noisest way possible and it makes me HATE him lol like someone said above. It makes me want to thump him hard. Ok what's worse is that my wee sister is 5, so she's got a little mouth and takes little bites, so the sound is smaller, but I hate it MORE. I feel like just taking her sandwich away and feeding it to an angry dog somewhere. GGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRR. And my mum slurps her tea when she's drinking it. I just want to tell her to SHUT UP.

Wow, why do we hate something so stupid and small so passionately!

Erm I would say ear plugs are a little OTT :p: if it's really getting to you to the point where you want to bang your fist on the table :p: Just excuse yourself and go to the toilet until you think the person has stopped eating :p: Always works for me lol, even at friends houses and dinner parties, it's a polite and respectable way to the leave the table whilst still retaining the urge to scream  xxx

I hate the sound of spit like when people open and close their mouths it's disgusting but I'm worried I'll never be able to kiss someone if this sound annoys me so much  I didn't start a thread on this because I thought it's pretty similar to this thread on the topic of sounds...any advice? xxx

I feel really bad because when I eat crisps I eat really loudly and people always look at me.. I've tried chewing in different ways and stuff but I still chew loudly, it annoys me too but I dunno what to do about it :dontknow: It's made worse by crinkly crisps..

I really can't stand when people cham though! I shared a house with my friend and the landlady lived there too, then moved out then was abusing the place by being there all the time to oversee building work anyway her and her bf eat soooooooooooooooooooo loudly! They eat with their mouths open and cham so badly! My aunt is the same, we offer her sweets just to see if she'll cham lol :p:
