'Dyslexic with numbers'...Is there a name for this?

I'm posting as Anonymous cause I don't want to sound like an idiot  I'm not really looking for help, just curious really...

I have trouble with numbers. Like I'll try to read a phone number or something out loud, and my brain can't seem to quickly reel off which number is which, I have to think about it for quite a few seconds. I also struggle with certain kinds of sums, for example 100 - 39...I know straight away it's either either 59 or 61, but it takes me a while to think about which one! I'm also hopeless at estimating distance (I find it really hard to guess how far away something is or how tall something is)...

It sounds silly and like I'm probably just crap at maths but I'm not, I've got maths Alevel and I'm doing well on my degree course which involves a lot of work with statistics. Does anyone else get this? Does it have a name?

Yes I have it. However I'm in the top 10% at math in the country. Go figure. Its called dyscalculia.

Excellent, I shall stop being anonymous then.

Do you get extra time on exams because of it?

No. I did most my exams before they found out. In math we was doing something but first step was subtraction and I got all confused. Thats when it was found out. You might be able to get extra time on math and science papers though.

Hmm i take quite a bit of time to recognise longer numbers and sometimes with simple sums too :\, always wondered if it was actually just me or not.

I think I have it. When im at work and I have to say numbers of products or whatever I always get number muggled up..

For instance say the code was 05589890

I'll read it, know what I wanna say but I'll say like 05889890 or 55089890. As I say it I know Im saying it wrong. Maybe Im just simple!

Like with dyslexia there are different types. Can be when reading numbers, in head or out loud, doing simple calculations, being able to do complex calculations etc.

how do you get diagnosed with this?! i think i have it! people used to laugh at me when i'd say i had maths dyslexia!

i cant tell the time for ****... unless its digital then i can only recognise like fifteen fourty-five, it takes me ages to realise that means quarter to four!

and i get confused after thousands so i could see £1000 and say ten thousand without realising! i also cant add up or anything in my head without REALLLLLLY thinking about it! so i never count change or owt coz i feel stupid!

its dead hard at work because i always use the change button to work out change for people but the other staff just think i MUST know how much change and shut the drawer so it goes off and im like :-s!

My math teacher sorted it out for me. Do some funny tests and whatnot. I'm sure LEA will have more info.

Yeah I had that...It also really REALLY just completely confuses me when something costs like £1.03 and someone pays with a £5 note and says 'shall I give you the 3p?'...I don't want to say 'no', but it completely throws me!

I think I might talk with whoever deals with this kind of thing at uni anyway, I guess it would be useful on both sides for when I have exams with lots of numbers in...

I don't see why you'd get a pc or a laptop to be honest, it's not going to help you in the same way that it'd help someone who was dyslexic write essays etc. Maybe they'd provide you with a calculator :p:
I have problems reading numbers out loud, but I have the same problem with words. I can see the word or the number in my head, or even on a piece of paper, but if i read it out I get the letters/numbers muddled up. I have to make patterns otherwise I struggle.

I did ok in maths at school though, it's just mobile numbers and the barcodes at work that I have difficulty with.
omg i swear i have this, i cant count for ****, and i can never read numbers properly. i have to do it really slowly and like 100 times to make sure its right :frown:

Severe Dyspraxia can lead to poor mathematical ability...and then some of us are just bad at maths, it doesn't mean you've 'got' something everytime :p:.

im not just bad at maths... my brain litrally freezes when i have to do "simple" sums... people stare at me like "come on ur joking aren't u" and im like yea... which buys me some time while i actually work it out!
