Standard Language Degree vs Translation one?

Hi, does anybody here do a translation degree, or even a standard one and has any advice either way? The uni's that I'm looking at (Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield) just have French and German, whereas Nottingham has the same, or a 'Modern Languages with Translation'. (http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/ugstudy/courses/modernlanguages/modern-languages-with-translation.aspx). I do prefer translation to literature so it sounds obvious to apply for this one, but I don't know if that'll mean I'll have to adjust my personal statement and whether I'll miss out on a large part of a standard degree (culture and so on) in order to just sit behind a computer and translate. Will it really help that much in the long term?
