proper sub fusc is worn for matriculation, exams, and meetings with important people- ie. very rarely. I'm guessing you'll have several days of exams, so having a couple of white shirts wouldn't go amiss. Formal hall seems to be just smart dress + gown, (suit for guys, anything smart looking for girls).

Sub fusc is worn at matriculation and during any end of year exam (e.g. honour mods, prelims, finals) but not termly collections.

Formal hall at Trinity only requires you to wear your gown when entering the hall. Underneath the gown you can wear whatever you like, though speaking from experience, the hall staff tend to draw the line at running shorts.

You also need to wear your gown to termly Presidential Collections (which aren't exams, but informal chats with the President). Other special events will generally specify if gowns should be worn or not.

Matriculation is on Saturday of 1st week Michaelmas, so 14th October this year.

It's also worn at the Merton 'Time Ceremony' :p:

'Time Ceremony'
is that the one they invented fairly recently because Merton felt they didn't have enough silly traditions?

Reply 7

I think originally it may have been intended as a parody of other Oxford traditions, but now it just seems a good excuse to dress up and drink port.

Dunno when it was invented... might be early 70s?

I'm sure some knowledgeable person will provide the answer...

It's to safeguard the space-time continuum. Very important business.

There's a reason why mertonians all look and behave so strange - they're like the Monks of History from Discworld.

Now, now... no need to be personal :p:

I mean it in an affectionate way. I have a sister at Merton, so have had quite a chance to meet a fair few of them.

As Sub Fusc goes, is the £35 OUSU Gown & Motar Board thing good value? Or is the material crap?

I my experience, it's good and much nicer than the stuff that I bought from Shepherd and Woodward - an ill-fitting mortarboard (what could be worse?!) and a gown with seemingly indelible creases...

Reply 13

I don't get it.

OUSU says they sell their gowns for GBP35 and claim High Street prices to be GBP 47.98. I'm looking at the offer Shepherd and Woodward sent me which says GBP 29 for a package.

Confused :frown:

So, is it better to order sub fusc now or get it when I come up to Oxford?

Reply 14

i haven't got any sub fusc order forms in my fresher's pack- will they still be offering these deals in freshers week?

Reply 15

Shepherd and Woodward sent you a package? They didn't send me nothink. But then, Ede and Ravenscroft sent me a flyer that other colleges didn't get. So there you go. They send a free scarf or similar treat with every order. Tempting...

I was thinking similar things about the OUSU stuff... all depends on whether it's good quality or just a binbag with some ribbons stapled to it or something.

Reply 16

is it worth paying more for eve and ravenscroft as the sizings are more specific than the OUSU, 167cm seemingly doesnt exist..lol. basically can u tell where people get their stuff from (dont really want to stand out).

also do many girls wear trousers for their sub fusc?

Reply 17

Yes, should I get the 35 pound ousu cap and gown bundle or not? I'm confused. And when they say cap do they mean mortar board, as didn't someone say that nobody wears the flat caps??
