amoxicillin and drinking

i'm currently taking amoxicillin for a chest infection (so therefore assume it's a form of antibiotic?) but my doctor didn't actually tell me what it was and i was surprised that there was no leaflet with the medication explaining about it - it simply said take three times a day on a sticker.
anyway i was wondering if it would be ok to have a drink while i'm taking it - i'm going out with a girl tonight and fancy having a pint but am not sure if it would mess with the medication?
any help appreciated

Yeah, amoxycillin is an antibiotic, and a very weak one at that.

Obviously drinking while on medication isn't going to help, but one pint should be OK. Any more and obviously you're messing your system up while you're trying to fight an infection, so it's not advisable.

Usually with antibiotics it's advised not to drink as it can weaken the effect of the medication but generally one drink is alright. Oh and I think drinking whiole on antibiotics can make you drunk quicker? I'm not 100% with ammoxicillin though as I never had that one, i'm allergic >_< but all antibiotics are similar

I once decided that drinking a glass of wine whilst taking amoxycillin would not cause me any great damage....just don't do it :frown:

Just heed the advice about Metronidazole if you are ever prescribed it. It causes serious side affects.

Probably best just to not get wasted while your on the drug.

amoxycillin is not 'weak' as an antibiotic

the concerns with antibiotics and drinking are with metronidazole in the main as has been previously said and the NHS direct site linked to

getting hammered while poorly is never a good idea ...

you should've asked the docs, it may not be that bad but if you're taking them 3 times a day then it may.
try not to drink, just say you're on medication.. i'm sure the girl won't be put off.

DONT DO IT. i ended up with a month in hospital and a near fatal disease from drinking whilst on amoxicillin with a chest infection. it really aint worth it.

Depends what's really wrong with you, how you feel and the dose.

As stated, Met is the only absolute contraindication to ETOH.

If you're not well, your tolerance decreases - you'll get drunker on less.

Pint or two is normal and fine though, my recomendation is that if you have a minor chest infection and if you must drink, a few pints won't do any real harm.
