So Embarrassing...Nits

Ok I've just had the most embarrassing experience of my life.

Went to get a haircut and the hairdresser told me she couldn't do it because I have nits! I had no idea and had to walk out in front of everyone who all gave me dirty looks.

What do I do now? I keep my hair really clean and haven't had them since I was like 5! I can't face going in there again...and I still need a haircut!

How old are you?

I assume you're a girl too.

Go to the chemist. Get a nit treatment. Use it.

Then you go back to the hairdressers and get your hair cut.

My little cousin recently had nits, and I did the treatment just in case. I don't think I actually had them, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

You don't have to tell anyone. Just get on with it.

That was pretty unprofessional of your hairdresser though. She could at least have said to you quietly.

And nits go for clean hair.

Can you get a parent to nit comb you as well after you've put the treatment on your hair? Proper combing is essential to getting rid of them.

I'm 16, and yes a girl.

Ok, will do that, is there a special way to nit comb though? Can I do it myself?

You have to buy a special nit comb, it has very thin gaps between each spike.

You can, but you might miss some because you won't be able to see what you're doing as well as another person can

That must have been awful for you, that hairdresser was well out of order.

Anyway I'd also advise putting loads of conditioner on your hair when combing.

Or, you could use a proper Nits treatment

I would recommend: http://www.boots.com/shop/product_details.jsp?productid=1046795&classificationid=1020550

I think I vaguely remember my mum putting it in, then combing it, then maybe washing it out, I can't remember. Read the leaflets in the shop when you go

Oh, and, don't be afraid to ask the pharmacist, they're trained to advise you on these things and won't judge you!

EDIT: From: http://www.headlice.co.uk/products/full_marks.asp
# Apply to dry hair and allow product to dry naturally. Use no heat.
# Leave in hair for 30 minutes. Wash with normal shampoo and use fine metal tooth comb to remove dead lice and eggs.
# People with asthma or eczema should consult their pharmacist before using this product.
# Always read the label.

i remember getting nits a couple of times when i was little and the shampoo treatments didnt work first time, even when combined with an hour every night of combing with the nit comb. they're resiliant little swines and u have to use the shampoo a couple of times as well as combing thoroughly every night. try and work out who u caught them off and politely tell them to sort it out before you catch them off him/her again

Argh this is like the 3rd nits thread in a week! Couldn't you have searched 'lice' or something and read another thread
All I have to say is, for the third time, £12.50, Boots, Lice Attack, no nits.
Good luck with everything xxx
P.S This situation happened to me, very embarassing but motivates you to sort it out so you can get your hair cut :p:

Last time I had nits was when I was 11, I used full marks and it actually worked. Also used a nit comb, and used it in the bathroom. Tip your head over the bathtub, and makesure your hair is damp then literally dig the comb into your scalp when combing through, and keep repeating this for about 10 minutes or so and you will get rid of a lot of them. But make sure you use some sort of treatment too.

nits dont just inhabit dirty gypsies you know :p:
its fair enough they didnt do your hair IMO because it may have caused spread to others, especialy if equipment isnt washed properly and they may be held liable or something. but still she couldve said it nicely, you should complain

nits go for any hair, clean or dirty! in a magazine i read you need to use a nit comb as well as shampoo stuff because some type of nits (didnt know there was more than one type) are resistant to nit busting shampoo.

the hairdresser is allowed to refuse cuttin your hair (hygeine law) because of nits as the towel they use on ur hair can contaminate all the other towels... but even so she was well harsh to say it in front of everyone.

my gosh the EXACT same thing happened to me at toni and guys, the worse part was i was with my m8s. the hairdresser told me about it n made me tie my hair in a ponytail. i asked him to tell my friends i was leaving cuz im ill, and he was nice enough to do so... i rang them later and told them the truth and told them to check their hair.

it was hell trying to get them out, but i found using hair masks works best as it conditions your hair, suffocates the critters and makes ur hair nice and healthy and shiny.
to get rid of the eggs i got my sister (who's 15) to go through my hair in a brightly lit room and pic out anything white she sees, even if its just dandruff... that got rid of the eggs.

i went back a week later and had my hair done.

yes they do go for clean hair. don't spread misinformation. also, DONT wash your hair with nit stuff too often. they build up resistance. when i got nits i think they already had resistance because although i was careful not to use it too often they just wouldnt go. i blasted them with different varities, alternative therpaies, cutting hair, straight coming through and 3 years later i still had them. i couldnt just not go to school so i had to be very careful to prevent other people getting them. eventually i think they just died out of natural causes to be honest. i'm not saying this will happen to you -you should just put it into perspective. by the end of it i wasnt really bothered.. nobody knew because they are so small, and it was just personal embarassment because they're crawly things whereas if it was something like an ear infection yoyu couldnt get rid of it wouldnt 'seem' so bad, when they're basically the same sort of thing - an infection.

YES. I had them for a long time, and I think that was partly due to their developing immunity. Apparently, up to 80% of all headlice are somewhat immune, so it can be REALLY hard to get rid of them. Just keep using the comb, and make sure you don't let your hair touch anyone else's, as that's how they spread.

Nits will live in any kind of hair - clean or dirty, long or short, curly or straight. There's no shame in catching them. The best thing to do is go to a local chemist and ask them what kind of treatment is being suggested for use at the moment - recommendations get 'alternated' around the country so that you don't get pockets of resistance in certain areas. That way you'll be using the best treatment. Also, make sure that you follow the instuctions exactly and finish the course of treatment, or the little b*****s will keep coming back.
