I needed a brace and once my doctor had refered me it took a couple of months. Once I got my first appointment they managed to see me every week and now I have great teeth! Just keep on being patient, maybe give them a call to see how long they think it will be, maybe there is another orthodontist with a smaller waiting list you could join? You will reach the top of the list one day! If it bothers you that much you could consider going private

Have they not given you an official date for the procedure?

By "proceedure", do you mean fitting a brace, or an operation?

I live in London, the orthodontics is Kings. I'd prefer it if they did the procedure here; rather then at uni, as I would prefer to be closer to my family whilst this procedure takes place. Plus I have only two more years left at uni, at which point afterwards I will be going to hopefully do a masters somewhere else.

The problem is that its a three year procedure, where basically I'll have to wear braces for six months; then they will break my jaw and will have to wear braces again! :frown: This really upsets me that I'll have to wait so long for a decent smile. I am 21.

Wow, that's pretty late to be performing such a proceedure. And you're waiting to have the braces fitted? That seems a bit rubbish to me.

You should be able to get yourself referred to an orthodontist in London if you really want, but bear in mind that you'll probably need to visit the practice every 6-8 weeks to have the braces tightened and to check everything's going where it should.
I am in a similar position.

I was referred to the orthodontic at the hospital as I need major treatment but I haven't heard from them now for over 13 months. I went up to the hospital and had some tests done and a few scans. I had to have a cleaning test, which I passed first go, this enabled me to be on the waiting list, well that's what the woman said. 13 months later, i still haven't heard. Should I ring them up too?

Yeah it's rather late for an orthodontic procedure, but that is because it only got diagnosed last year. I had the problem for ages but I never realised, until someone pointed it out. Like I noticed it was there, and asked people why so and so was like that, and they said "ohhh give it time, your teeth are still developing".

Kings College London have an orthodontic department ...

I can't go private because I cannot afford it.

17 months? Well I haven't got long to go, I'm on month 13. Did you have any confirmation that you were on the waiting list? How long will we have to wait?

I've had all the scans and tests, but nothing through the post, such as confirmation stating I'm on the waiting list. Might give them a ring - do you think I should?

yes, call them.
My sister was referred to an orthodontist to give her braces, when she eventually got there, they just said, This is purely cosmetic so you'll have to pay thousands to get it done as the NHS refuse to cover it! Well if it was just cosmetic, why refer her? They weren't bothering her so it wasn't as if she'd asked to be referred! Funnily enough, she didn't have it done!

I hope they dont do that with me....Mine is really serious. If I don't get it sorted out, I could end up getting arthritis in my jaw.
Ooooooh, well the original dentist told her that something would happen to her mouth if she didn't have it doen, and then they decided it was only cosmetic, which we hadn't been told before.

But, hopefully that sorta thing is really rare!

Arthritis, now that would hurt! Surely that should put you near the top of the list? Other people who don't have an immediate danger to health of their mouth?

Yeah thats what I thought too. Plus there are endless other non-cosmetic problems, my jaw clicks everytime I chew food for example. Speech is slightly affected too and I can't bite apples.

See attachements.

As you can see, it isn't a very nice prospect that I will have to live with this for the next four years. So I would like it if they'd contact me sooner, rather then later. I just want to get it done ASAP.

It'll get there eventually, but I feel your frustration...
Some of my friends had braces on the NHS and had no problems, whereas my brother and I had private treatment and no end of trouble (especially in my brother's case, who's currently suffering) with a pretty rubbish orthodontist. So your NHS treatment might be worth the wait!

Ouch. But better late than never

I'm so ashamed for ending my post in a silly cliche, but it's true.
