its all about blood groups
if you are blood group a then you will have a antigens on your red blood cells (antigens are cell markers or recognition sites) you will also have b antibodies this means that if you mix a type blood with b type aggulation happens the blood basically clumps together because B type blood will have b antigens and A antibodies the b antibodies from the A blood attatch to the B blood type cells and clump them together
this results in AB type blood being the universal recipient (due to no antibodies (a or b) and O being the universal donor (due to no anitgens
