Damn diabetes

Just found out that I have diabetes type 1:frown: Im wondering what the hell has caused it though because im quite sporty and have eaten well. Ive been looking things up and found that it could be gentic (doubt it) or cause I was formula fed as a baby, it produces a higher risk. Im not obese or anything:confused: I don't know but does anyone on here have it? How long have you had it?

Its not caused by bad diet or obesity, more likely after a viral infection. Its a bum but quite easily controlled and your life wont change that much at all. Just be careful with the booze.

Unlucky.

Type I, there's nothing you could have done.

Chin-up, at least you don't have to have pig insulin!

I have it, type one is NOT caused by your diet, despite all the myths perpetrated when you were a child to try and stop you eating sweets.

Again, obesity doesnt really figure for type one. Most likely before you were diagnosed you were either rake thin or beginning to lose weight, as your body couldnt process your food and thus was feeding off any available fat stores on your body (thats basically why untreated diabetes is so dangerous, eventually the body has no option but to eat the fats protecting your major organs. So never be tempted to not take your insulin!)

Its very manageable  Ive never been hospitalized through diabetes directly- ive never had terribly low blood glucose. I drive and ride horses and go to uni and have a hectic social life-it wont stop you doing the things you want

Cheers, I didn't really lose weight just started shaking and drinking loads of orange. Glad your coping well with it, guess I'l just have to adjust uh. Like my mate said if it was left to nature (as in no medical technology) Id die, we have weird conversations don't ask! So yeah, thanks for the advice.

Yep type one diabetes usually caused by viral infection so nothing to do with diet or how much exercise you do. Just gotta watch your glucose concentration intake, it wont be a major lifestyle change.

I've been type 1 for about 8 years now, I'm in 3rd year at uni now. Diabetes is no biggie, I don't know any better. Don't change your life to suit Diabetes, just plan ahead. Totally normal life, hardly notice it! (except for the whole injection-thing, of course!)
Plus, look on the bright side, free prescriptions for everything!!!

Had it for 3 years. Was diagnosed when I went into ketoacidosis and very nearly died. Since then it's been easy to control and have led a near-normal life, being a 3rd year in uni now.

It's not a problem nowadays. Some people can control it with diet alone?

Type 2 can be sometimes controled with diet alone. Some people diagnosed with type 1 go into remission when they do not need to take any insulin as long as their diet is sensible but that does not last long and they greadualy start to require insulin injections again.

There is all sorts of theories on why people get type 1 diabetes. My personal favourite is that it is a type of autoimmune disease. Folowing a viral infection body defence system goes a bit crazy and starts to attack cells in the pancrease, which seem to display antigens which are a bit simlar to the various.

Not type I you can't

type 1 diabetes is where the pancreas stops making insulin - this insulin needs to be replaced - with insulin

type 2 diabetes is where the body is not as sensitive was it was to insulin so can sometiems be managed by diet and lifestyle changes, sometimes by oral medication and sometimes by insulin

type 1 diabetes is always managed with insulin - but all diabetics on insulin are not type 1 ... hence the reason we now talk aobut type 1 and type 2 rather than insuline dependent and non insulin dependent

I am a type one diabetic too, have been so for 10 years now (diagnosed at 9). Like others have said it cannot be caused by a poor diet or anything similar and it does need to be controlled by insulin.

I have struggled a lot with my diabetes but that is because i have also suffered from an eating disorder. With good management it shouldn't change your life too much, you just have to try and take extra special care of yourself .
