how do you tell the difference between a covalent bonding and a dative bonding???
Covalent bond is when two atoms share a pair of electrons, i.e. CH4

Dative bond is when one atom donates a lone pair of electrons to another atom. I.e NH3 has a lone pair of electrons on the nitrogen. The lone pair is donated to a H+ ion. Forms NH4+

Dative covalent bond = When one atom gives BOTH electrons in a covalent bond. I.e. ammonia. It has a lone pair of electrons on the nitrogen but a H+ ion can come along and make ammonium.

Whereas a covalent bond is when atoms in a molecule share one electron i.e. methane (carbon shares its 4 outer electrons with 4 hydrogen atoms).

Damn it, you beat me!
