What's in a (nick)name anyway?

Hey guys, so I'm trying to find a nickname for a friend who I've really got close to. I'm not looking to recycle anyones nicknames for their friends/partners/whatever as I want to think of one myself. If there is a thought process for finding a nickname - I know there probably isn't but just in case there is - How do you guys come up with nicknames for each other?

because apparently I look like tom hanks and run funny :s-smilie:

It was the first nickname I got give when I turned up to my unit.

I heard the tale of a lad called 'buttons' his surname was something like mushroom in French, so he got called buttons after button mushrooms ... Usually someone will make a joke about a name a habit or a trait and it will catch and become a nickname.
