Dental hygiene to go on to study dentsitry?

I need some help...in a mess!

AS predicted grades last year were ABC (c for chemistry), and I got ABC for my AS levels (C in biology, A in maths). So I spoke to the head of 6th form today, who said that my predicted grades were right, and that I should bring all my grades up to As, and apply for 2008. i.e. take a gap year, because apparantly universities don't like people reaplying? Quote "dentists are meant to be first time students, they don't want people to try over and over again".

Can you verify this?

And plus, I was thinking about dental hygiene. If I get a 3 Bsc Hons degree, can I skip a few years off dentistry? Will universities like the fact that I have a dental hygiene degree, and easily accept my application to be a dentist? What if I transfer to dentistry after the first year of dental hygiene?

Please help! :frown:

Hi, I think that it will be harder to get into dentistry through dental hygine/therapy, as this is a career itself, and its more or less same as dentistry. There is a shortage of dentists atm... (soon to change or has lol)... and wont take u on as u can get a job when u got a degree...
This is backed up as the open day at manchester stated it will not be a steppin stone for dentistry.
Thats my opinion and dont quote me on this, but ope it gave u a better idea?...

Thanks, i didnt think of that. perhaps im better off doing a biomedics degree. do u know if i can transfer after a dental hygiene course though? and have like 1 or 2 years off dentistry?
If you did a science degree and got a place the course would be 4 years instead of 5.

I honestly don't know if you can transfer, but i know someone thats just startin their dental degree after gettin a first for Biomed...

you won't be able to transfer from dental hygiene to deetistry i dont think. One of the reasons being dental hygiene is a diploma and dentistry is a degree- another they are two very different courses and two very differnt careers (even though they are both linked to the dental profession)

Yeh, i was thinking biomedics would be better, but that means 7 years of studying, and I'm scared I'll either run out of money or loose interest and get married and ruin my dream :frown: And there is a BSC degree for dental hygiene at Birmingham.

Thanks for all the advicel...but one last question...What about reaplying? Do universities not like it?

Lots of people reapply and get in fine. Just as long as your'e not a resitter- they dont really like that (you have to have completed AS and A2 within 2 years, you can reist modules within the time with no problem)

I am starting on a BSc course for Dental Hygien and therapy in september, and from the looks at how dentistry is going, I think Bsc will be able to top up and do Dentsisty

Do the BSc and not the Diploma H+T course.

I want to entry this course as well because I don't have enough money at the moment.
Do I get any salaries when I'm studying the Dental hygience BSc??

You CAN do dentistry after doing a hygiene AND therapy DEGREE. BUT you will only get one year less of study (ie. a 4 year course) and many uni's will not consider you for this 4 year course.
However, if you do a general science degree, ALL dentistry uni's will accept you onto the 4 year course (provided you get a 2.1 or above in your degree). So yes, Biomed/biochem or something along those lines is a much better choice.

If dentistry is what you really want to do then you can make it happen. 7 years of studying is not that long (I will have done 10 when I finish dentistry) and you will have a student loan throughout and funding for a 4 year dentistry course.

was wondering what unis in the uk would accept this because ive been rejected from all the dentistry unis and i have an interview for dental hygiene and therapy, so if i do this course, id like to know what unis would let me do dentistry x

Don't think it's a diploma bro ofc there's are diplomas routes for it but DHT is q degree you don't end up with anything other than q degree if you study at uni
