Adolph Cameron, head of the Jamaican Teachers' Association, said many boys perform poorly because their fear that appearing studious undermines their masculinity.

He claimed that many youngsters turn to a so-called “hustle culture” to make money, rather than chasing careers built on academic achievement and hard work.

Mr Cameron warned that the attitude was affecting the academic standards of Afro-Caribbean boys both in Jamaica and in Britain.

They are one of England's worst-performing ethnic groups in schools. Last year just 40 per cent of Afro-Caribbean boys achieved five good GCSEs including English and maths, compared with the national average of 58.5 per cent.

Mr Cameron told the BBC: "That notion of masculinity says that if as a male you aspire to perform highly it means you are feminine, even to the extent of saying you are gay.

My point is the title. The title refers to "Black" students as in all "Black" students. I am pointing out that it is not all "Black" students who think of education as effeminate. SOme, like the Nigerians and the Ghanaians outperform their British contemporaries.

However like 60% of Asians in that bracket achieve five gcses

edit: I remember they spent agees on the topic and all the positive action they can take to help them catch up. Of course the 40% is going to seem low when there are disproportionatly high income White British to offset that average.

Incredibly stupid.
Pretty sure it's either they're not built for academic exams and such or they just don't have the work ethic.
During my GCSE's I revised for fun, smashed my results. Come A level, I dropped putting time in on schoolwork for partying, drinking and socializing IRL and on the internet, and found it incredibly hard to revise when I sat down. Even though I knew what was on the line.
Mucked up my A levels as a result.
