AEA or AS further maths?

Hey, i was planning to pick up further maths AS this year, but when i started back at college i found out i cant because of a timetable clash. Ive heard about the maths AEA, and wondered how difficult this is in comparison to AS further. Am i right in thinking it requires only single maths knowledge? Also how does this rate highly as f.maths AS? Is it something that all colleges/schools offer if asked, or only certain places?

The AEA is not really comparable with AS Further Maths they are two completely different things. You are right in thinking that the AEA cover C1-C4 knowledge only but the questions are a lot less structured than A level.

I would say if you can study for an AS in Further Maths then do that and maybe do the AEA as well as there is very little information available to help you study for it since it has only been going for a couple of years.

As for who asks for it, no uni that I am aware of specifically asks for it but some say they like students to try it.

Hope that helps a bit.

They are entirely different concepts; one is an AS course while the other is simply an exam that requires no extra preparation. Comparison is thus impossible, but if you are asking which would be looked on more favourably then it would be AS FM. It will probably take you at least 60/70 hours of learning time to do the AS FM, while AEA you just sit down and take the exam, albeit after doing two or three past papers; therefore, naturally, the AS FM will be more highly rated. (although that is not really the correct term to use)

warwick consider Aea very highly, it defintiely improves your maths if you take it, and the further maths stuff is quite easy on its own anyway, you could teach yourself!

Well, it all depends, i may be teaching myself physics A2 depending if Edexcel A2 is not compatible with AS OCR (i self taught physics AS on a different OCR), so wouldnt be able to do A2 phys at my full time college. If so, then im not sure how manageable the work load would be

Really?! Thats all the preparation sufficient for AEA? I was expecting a lot more work than that!

The AEA qualifications:

will be included in the UCAS tariff from 2006
are based on Advanced GCE subject criteria
test depth of understanding and ability to think critically and creatively
test connections between different elements of the subject
require no additional teaching or resources.

Furthermore:

...it is also the case that the Advanced Extension Award requires no knowledge of academic material beyond the syllabus of its corresponding A-Level subject and thus rewards the student with a better understanding and appreciation of the material which the A-Level does not fully examine.

What degree do you want to study at University?

If you are studying a degree with a high maths content like maths, physics, engineering, certain computing degrees etc then doing further maths AS and knowing something about complex numbers, differential equations, matrices, vectors etc is invaluable.

For students whose schools/colleges let them down and don't offer them any Further AS courses there is a government supported initiative the Further Maths Network. You are able to study Further Maths through them.

I am told that certain Economics degree courses have a demanding maths/stats content and some students often do an AS in Further Maths to prepare for these courses like FP1,S3,S4 or FP1,FP2,S3.

AEA is a challenging, single paper exam based on the A level syllabus. The main A level subjects all have AEA papers and the exam boards share out the setting of the papers. EDEXCEL sets the Maths. I think OCR sets the Economics. The maths AEA exam is usually set at the end of June/early July. Your school/college would need to enter you at the time that they are doing A level entries in Spring.

Unlike Further Maths, AEA does not involve learning extra topics.
