ok. so how these cameras work then if the car is moving? can they catch you going in the opposite direction?

Don't thinkso, whenever they follow someone though the person in fronts speed is displayed on a screen. Probably does some calculation along the lines of speed police are travelling + acelloration away from police.

kk thanks. if you have any more info on this would love to know.

They follow you over a sufficient distance then use the speed on the camera to prosecute you..

aha, but can they for example see you coming in the opposite direction and decide to film you...can they measure your speed?

Hmm as far as I know, only if they turned around and followed you..

They don't have any automatic speed measuring devices in patrol cars - instead they use a system called Provida which is basically a glorified stopwatch - by measuring distance travelled against fixed points of reference and time, they can get an estimate of your speed that is, in theory, very accurate - it's this that you see on the patrol car videos. However, a lot of police don't use it properly or ignore it altoghether, which is why you should ask to see the patrol car video if you get caught on a motorway - you can work out your actual speed with triangulation, an single officers opinion that you were breaking the speed limit is by no means proof .
I really doubt they have cameras that can catch your speed when the police car is also moving, that would be a very complex piece of kit!

All they need to do to find your speed is tailgate you and then check their speedometer.

They have guns to detect your speed, then they chase you and pull you over - but i highly doubt they have actual guns which take your photo whilst they are moving.

u know nothing, be quiet.

traffic police have a very sophisticated piece of computer placed in the dash. its called vascar.

has ANPR as well.

the VASCAR doesnt take a photo, it records video.

the police must catch you to prosecute you with it.

if you can get away, your clear.

You are such an idiot, you tell me i know nothing, but all you did was back up my statement. I said they can only find your speed when stationary, now you tell me in wrong yet if you actualy read up at all about your precious piece of kit, you would realise it does exactly that and can not measure oyur speed whilst the police car is moving since all it does is measure the time taken for a car to move between two pre selected checkpoints and then use the time and distance to calculate speed, hence the reason it is refered to as a glorified stop watch.
Towards you, no, equipment can't do this.
Following you, if the speedometer is calibrated, then yes, they can.
Following you, police officers judgement, backed up by video which can be checked later. ANPR has nothing to do with speed, checks the plate against PNC.
Following you, no video, no speedo calibration, can use things like mile markers and a timer to back up his judgement. Generally this would require a second officer in the car to do.
So towards you, no, you're safe.
Except they are expert witnesses...

VASCAR is their main tool when following a car, explanation here:

didnt say it had anything to do with it, just said it also has ANPR, as a throw away commentto show the onboard computer does many thing.
