tie???havnt heard of this, what does it look like? everywhere ive seen says black ribbon.

also whilst on sub fusc qs, where r u getting ur gown and mortarboard from? i was thinking ede and ravenscroft rather than the OUSU offer as their sizings are a bit vague and by the time u add in the free gift from E&R theres no difference in price...and yes i do want a free teddy bear:biggrin:

OUSU all the way for me - polyester nice and shiny (!) and requires zilch ironing - unlike the more upmarket cotton versions.

My college Freshers' Guide says "black tie (a narrow black ribbon will suffice)". But if everyone else is wearing a ribbon then so shall I.

The ribbon is normal, plus you get to tie it 'in a style of your choice'.
Personally I have always wanted to get some of that ribbon with wire down the sides and tie a huge bow with it.

do many girls wear trousers for their sub fusc rather than skirts?

Reply 5

Yeee, I got my skirt/shirt part of sub-fusc today  And we get to tie the ribbon our own way? Score, I've got the perfect way

Its about 50:50 as far as trousers/skirt goes. Go for what ever you feel more comfortable in although bear in mind that matriculation takes place in early october and it can be pretty chilly.

back to gown questions...so should i get my gown/motarboard before school starts?
i didnt know about E&R before but we get a free teddy bear. now that makes all the difference!

It doesn't really matter when you have your gown as long as you have it for matriculation (saturday of 1st week). I think some colleges also like their freshers to wear it for the fancy freshers dinner thing in frshers week, but we didn't have to for ours cos we didn't have enough notice and so nobody got theirs in time.

I wear trousers  Not least cos it's hard to cycle to summertown in a skirt!!
